Football fields around the county were alive with the sounds of summer quarterbacks barking out their cadences, coaches yelling, linemen hitting the blocking sleds, out-of-shape players catching their breath and whistles as practice began Monday. Above left, Warren Central’s Rod Montgomery eyes the ball just before catching it during a receiving drill. Above right, Vicksburg defensive lineman Derrick Adams hits the sled during a blocking drill. Below left, WC’s Jamie Block gets a splash of water from Deonte Selvy during a break. Below right, first-year VHS head coach Alonzo Stevens plays quarterback during a drill with his offensive line. Down in their stance are Junior Nix, left, and Charles Wilson. WC and VHS play their first games Aug. 31 in the Red Carpet Bowl Classic, which will be at WC this year. VHS will play John Ehret out of New Orleans at 6 p.m., followed by WC and Wayne County.
