WC Seniors win opener of tourney; Juniors, Pearl split

[07/10/01] Two of Warren Central’s biggest returning guns and a newcomer turned it up a notch in the first round of the AAU Seniors tournament.

Carl Upton pitched a shutout and Brian Pettway went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the WC Seniors to a 8-0 win over Jackson Prep at Clinton on Monday. They play Terry or University Christian Tuesday at 2:30.

Darryl Harper, who didn’t start on the Vikings’ state championship team, went 3-for-4 and Chase Towne went 2-for-3 with and double and scored three runs.

Upton struck out five, walked one and scattered five hits.

The final game of the 10-team tournament will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

WC Juniors 13-2, Pearl 2-6

Mark Different went 3-for-5 for the WC Juniors in a 13-2 win over Pearl’s varsity team. Vaughn Mims added two hits and Ryan Grey had a two-run double. Josh Gain got the victory and Kyle Gordon pitched the final three innings of a five-hitter.

The Pirates got the best of the Juniors in the other game despite Different’s two hits, one of which was a double. Mims took the loss.

The WC Juniors will play at Porters Chapel Tuesday at 7 p.m.
