EDNA L. HACKWORTH

PORT GIBSON Edna L. Hackworth died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Claiborne County Hospital. She was 101.

Mrs. Hackworth was a member of First Baptist Church in Port Gibson where she was in the choir. She was a junior matron, chairman of the Church Decoration Committee and a member of the Missionary Society and Know Each Other Better Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Baltimore Moore and Caroline Smith-Moore; four brothers, four sisters, and two grandsons, Norman Cook Jr. and Abraham Cook.

Survivors include a son, Norman Cooks of Chicago; two grandsons, Anthony Cooks and Jene Cooks, both of Chicago; four granddaughters, Maggie Strickland and Levern Cooks, both of Chicago, and Edna Geddy and Jane Marcellous, both of St. Paul, Minn.; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Scott’s Memorial Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service at the church.

FREDERICK EARL SWANEY

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. Frederick Earl Swaney died Friday, June 15, 2001, in Largo, Fla. He was 78.

Born in Traverse City, Mich., Mr. Swaney lived in Holly Springs most of his life. He was a resident Collierville, Tenn.

He joined the Naval Air Corps and later switched to the Army Air Corps. He served in the Armed Forces for four years as an aviator. He was also in the National Guard for a number of years and was of the Baptist faith.

He received his law degree from the University of Mississippi and practiced law in Holly Springs, serving as prosecuting attorney. He taught at Mississippi College and was also involved in real estate, building recreational developments including Massanutten Ski Resort in Virginia, Tansi in Tennessee and others in West Virginia, Massachusetts, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Georgia. He restored the antebellum homes Grey Gables in Holly Springs and the Balfour House in Vicksburg.

He also owned a Civil War shop and antique shop in Vicksburg. He built subdivisions in Holly Springs and Eads, Tenn. A hunter and fisherman, he owned Quailwood hunting resort in Marshall County.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moore Swaney of Holly Springs; his former wife, Lois Bonds Swaney; three daughters, Jorja Lynn of Holly Springs, Farrah McAlexander of Oxford and Melody Golding of Vicksburg; three sons, Randall Swaney of Eads, Scott Swaney of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Dr. Walker Swaney of Oxford; two sisters, Jo Anne Hoydick of Traverse City, Mich., and Leona Watson of Florida; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis with the Rev. Ed Morton officiating.

Visitation will follow at the home of Randall Swaney, 746 Pisgah Road in Eads.

ERNESTINE P. WHITLEY

Ernestine P. Whitley died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 85.

A homemaker, Mrs. Whitley was a member of Mount Zion No. 4 M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Whitley; her parents, Charlie and Fredonia Smith; two brothers, Charlie Smith Jr. and Calvin Smith; and four sisters, Maggie Dillard, Ruth Swain, Ruby Claiborne and Susie Lovett.

She is survived by four sons, Raymond Smith and John H. Porter, both of Vicksburg, Sammie Porter of Washington, D.C., and Preston Porter of Maryland; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.
