Fire visits same address a year later

Culkin volunteer firefighters pull the roof off a trailer at 726 Sherman Ave. that caught fire Thursday afternoon. The Culkin Volunteer Fire Department was called to the fire at 4:32 p.m. Robert Smith, who owned the trailer, lost his home at the same address to a fire almost one year ago, on March 6. The home was less than a mile from a city fire department and a city fire hydrant is two-tenths of a mile from the site where the trailer burned a year later. The fire last year started as a grass fire, but spread to the structure and engulfed the home before volunteers from Culkin arrived. City fire trucks did not respond to the blaze last year because the home was outside the municipal limits, but did assist in the fire Thursday. Roberta Smith, Smith’s mother, who was living in the trailer, told firefighters she heard a noise coming from a gas heater in the living room and shortly after saw flames coming from the heater. No one was injured in the blaze, but the trailer was destroyed. Anyone wishing to make donations to the Smith family may call Robert Smith at 636-5548. (The Vicksburg Post/PAT SHANNAHAN)
