GEORGE E.BATES

George E. Bates died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 88.

Mr. Bates, who had lived in Vicksburg for five years, was the former owner of Bates Army Surplus in Morton and he was a member of First Baptist Church of Morton.

He was the son of the late George and Ella Bates of Pisgah.

Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Betsy Stewart of Fairborn, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Fay D. Bates of Vicksburg; two daughters, Mary Ellen Flowers of Vicksburg and Patricia Stewart of Fairborn; one son, Albert Dell Bates of Rockingham, N.C.; one brother, Claude Bates of Pisgah; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Fisher-Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

HELEN MAE LEOTY SEVIER

TALLULAH Helen Mae Leoty Sevier died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at her home in Madison Parish. She was 75.

Born in Darnell, La., Mrs. Sevier had lived in Madison Parish for 65 years. She was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Spencer Sevier.

She is survived by a son, Robert Spencer Sevier of Tallulah; a daughter, Glenna Louise Sevier DeBenedetto of New Orleans; one sister, Sue Post of Tallulah; one brother, Tommy Leoty Sr. of Tallulah; two grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends.

Services were at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Fulton officiating. Burial followed at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Pallbearers were Keith Post, Marshall Sevier, Mike Sevier, Tommy Leoty Jr., Andrew Sevier and Billy Sevier.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.

HENRY SWEEZER JR.

Services for Henry Sweezer Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Ararat M.B. Church with Pastor T.J. Moreland officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the church.

Mr. Sweezer died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 87.

Mr. Sweezer retired as a machinist from Anderson-Tully. He was a member and deacon of Mount Ararat M.B. Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sweezer was a member of Christian Church Union Society No. 2, Christian Home Society No. 9, Overcome Masonic Lodge No. 1 AF&AM and American Legion Tyner-Ford Post No. 213.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Sweezer; two brothers, George Sweezer and John Sweezer; one sister, Corrine Judge; and his parents, Henry Sweezer Sr. and Corrine Sweezer.

He is survived by a son, Tony Sweezer of Vicksburg; a stepson, Gabriel Stewart of Gulfport; one sister, Katie Mae Sweezer of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends, including Roberta Denham, Linda Sweezer and Lucille Miller, all of Vicksburg.

JERRY JONES YOSTE

JACKSON Jerry Jones Yoste died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his home in Jackson. He was 77.

Mr. Yoste was a native of Vicksburg and graduate of St. Aloysius High School. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1942, received his officer’s commission and pilot’s wings and ferried B-24 bombers to Europe.

He received a bachelor of science degree from Delta State University. He was named Outstanding Manager of the Year for L.L. Ridgeway’s in 1972, 1978 and 1982. He had served as president of the Jackson Optimist Club and was a member of the Mississippi Geological Society, Mississippi Geophysical Society, the Petroleum Club, Jackson Yacht Club and the Catalina Club.

Mr. Yoste retired in 1989 and was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alice Barbara Yoste, and a grandson, Jake Scott Addison.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Guchereau Yoste; one son, Jesse Yoste of New Orleans; three daughters, Claudia Addison, Carol Defore and Mary Scott Hegwood, all of Jackson; two brothers, Harry Yoste of Madison and Edward Yoste of Memphis; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Richard Catholic Church in Jackson. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg under the direction of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the church.
