Also arrested was 25-year-old Edward Wright, 1328 Bay St.

Wright, who is facing a charge of accessory after the fact to murder, was arrested at 614 Dabney St., Tuesday night, Culbertson said.

Both had their initial appearances in Vicksburg Municipal Court Wednesday night. They were being held without bond in the Warren County Jail.

Culbertson said about two hours after Wilson was arrested a .380 semi-automatic believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from a creek at the end of Brookley Drive in Hamilton Heights subdivision.

Culbertson said the two arrests and subsequent discovery of the gun were the result of good police work by Detective Sgt. Doug King and Detective Randy Naylor.

“They really worked hard on this and didn’t let any of the leads get cold,” he said.

Baker, 727 Adams St., died Tuesday afternoon about 15 hours after he was shot once in the stomach.

The Chicago native, who had recently moved to Vicksburg, was shot about 2:50 a.m. while standing near Ernest Thomas Realty on Cherry Street.

Under Vicksburg’s curfew law, Wilson should not have been out past midnight.

Culbertson said Wilson and Wright were driving by the Cherry Street business and had a verbal exchange with Baker minutes after he left The Smoke Break at Clay and Cherry streets.

“We believe they went around the corner and parked their car and came back and assaulted the victim,” Culbertson said.

At some point during the fight, Wilson pulled a gun and shot Baker and then the two men left on foot, Culbertson said.

After being shot, Baker stumbled back to the door of the convenience store and collapsed.
