JIMMY ERVIN

Jimmy Ervin died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 58.

Mr. Ervin was a lifelong resident of Warren County. He retired from the Vicksburg Fire Department as assistant chief. He was employed at Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradications Foundation Inc. as a field unit supervisor for Warren County. He was a past board member of the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Center in Greenville. He was president of the International Association of Firefighters, the local 1686, past president and vice-president of Mississippi State Firefighters Association. He was co-founder of the Oak Ridge Fire Department and the Oak Ridge Opry. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Band and Bradley’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Clifton Ervin and Molly McGuffee Ervin; three sisters, Bernice Branan, Mary Lee and Peggy Guthrie; four brothers, Eugene Ervin, Otto Ervin, Sidney K. Ervin and Don Wayne Ervin.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Armstrong Ervin of Vicksburg; a daughter, Jimelle E. McBroom of Vicksburg; a son, John Ervin of Vicksburg; three brothers, Charles Ervin and T.J. Ervin, both of Vicksburg, and Cecil Ervin of Deland, Fla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Herron and David Patrick officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Steven Carlisle, Michael Crawford, Stanley Scallions, James “Bud” Shiers, William Guthrie, Grady Hollowell, Johnny Phillips and W.E. Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Katherine Crawford, Bree Lee Jr., Doris Sprouse, Johnny Puckett and employees and retired employees of the Vicksburg Fire Department.

THELMA STRONG MOBLEY HAMMACK

UTICA Thelma Strong Mobley Hammack died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Clinton Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. She was 93.

Mrs. Hammack was born in Lexington and later moved to Edwards with her parents. She attended high school at Benton Boarding School and Utica High School. She worked for Weaver’s Department Store and managed Hubbard’s Restaurant for many years. She was a member of Utica Christian Church and former president and member of Wise Home Demonstration Club.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marion Leon Mobley and Carl Hammack; her parents, John Robert and Betty Corrine Jackson Strong.

She is survived by four daughters, Katherine Ramsey and Betty Denley, both of Utica, Virginia berry of Marshall, Texas, and Elizabeth Young of Madison; a sister, Johnnie Ruth Strong Dear of Jackson; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Utica Christian Church with the Rev. John Ed. Snell officiating. Burial followed at Utica Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home of Utica.

Pallbearers were R.E. Mobley, Russell McGuffee, Murray Griffin, Gene Griffin, Don Price, Rudolf, R.C. Mobley and Lee Herren.

GEORGE L. REID

George L. Reid died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 78.

Mr. Reid was a native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg. He was the son of the late George L. and Margaret Elliott Reid Sr. He was the owner and operator of the Reid Stamp Co. for 20 years. He served as a radio operator in the Yukon Territory during World War II and he was in the United States Army Air Force. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion Post No. 3 and Porters Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Aline Markstrom.

He is survived by his wife, Norma S. Reid of Vicksburg; three sons, David Reid of Vicksburg, Carl Reid of Brandon and Kyle Reid of Hattiesburg; a daughter, Susan Ervin of Risingsun, Ind.; a sister, Peggy Clayton of Mobile; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Biedenharn, pastor of Porters Chapel United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 Monday night at the funeral home.

DOROTHY ANN VERSER WEBB

TALLULAH Services for Dorothy Ann Verser Webb were at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of New Roads, La., and at 3 p.m. at Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah. Officiating were the Rev. Randy Osborn and the Rev. Greg Clark.

Mrs. Webb died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. She was 83.

Mrs. Webb was a native of McGehee, Ark., and a longtime resident of Tallulah. For the past 10 years, she lived in New Roads, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Mandeville Webb, and her parents, Ralph and Ruth Verser.

She is survived by three daughters, Dianne Miller of Monroe, and Peggy Smith and Patricia Robinson, both of New Roads; and 10 grandchildren, George “Chip” Miller, Dr. Lee Miller, Betsy Miller McLean, Meg Smith, Mary Katherine Gottlieb, Laura Smith, LeighAnna Robinson, Georgia Robinson, Day Robinson and Paul D. Robinson Jr.

Pallbearers were grandsons and sons-in-law.
