Newton, Delta State finish with bang, record win total

[05/01/02]Craig Newton hit his third home run in the last two games as Delta State beat Belhaven, 7-2, to finish the regular season with its school-record 46th win.

The ex-Warren Central star hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to push his season total to 10.

Eric Smith had a three-run shot and Andy Dillard was 3-for-4.

Kyle Wilks had a triple and went 2-for-5 for the Blazers (26-30).

Newton, a sophomore catcher is hitting .443, good for second on the team. His homer total is also tied for second. Steven Tomaszewski and Dillard tied for the team lead with 11 in 195 and 182 at-bats, respectively. Jud Thigpen had 10 homers in 152 at-bats while Newton took only 88.

The Statesmen (46-4) play Valdosta State in the Gulf South Conference tournament in Millington, Tenn., Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
