The Vicksburg Post prints obituaries for residents, former residents and residents’ immediate family members who resided elsewhere when notified by a family member or a funeral home. There is no charge for printing an obituary, but all are edited to meet the newspaper’s requirements.
JAMES GASTON HANNAH
James Gaston Hannah died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. He was 74.
A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Hannah was a charter member of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church and a retired Army corporal serving during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaston “Jack” Therrell Hannah and Virginia Gertrude Hagans Hannah.
Survivors include seven cousins, Joy Adams, Frances Meadows and Dorothy Fleming, all of Vicksburg, Theral Hannah of Enid, Okla., June Snyder of Algona, Iowa, Polly Michael of Benld, Ill., and Margie Hannah of Shreveport, La; and other relatives.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Donnie Clark, Ira Ervin, Brad Redditt, David Lyons, Lavon Jeffers, Jack Pace, Rowdy Nosser and Carl Pettway.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John C. Williams, Wayne Hearn, Roger Graham, Rocky Nosser, Elbert Redditt and Dr. William Wooten.
WILLIE J. HORTON
Willie J. Horton died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at his home. He was 47.
A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Horton was employed by Wal-Mart SuperCenter and was a member of Jackson Street M.B. Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Horton Sr. and Mattie Havard Horton; and a brother, Curtis Horton Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Whitley of Jackson and Nicole Horton of Clarksdale; three brothers, James Horton of Los Angeles, Wallace Horton of Jackson and Calvin Horton of Vicksburg; two sisters, Essie Brown of Vicksburg and Thelma Carter of Pontiac, Mich.; and one grandchild.
Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
BENJAMIN JOHNSON
Benjamin “Ben” Johnson died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. He was 98.
Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Johnson was a member of Pleasant Green M.B. Church and worked for Valley Dry Goods and the Switzer family for 73 years.
Survivors include a nephew, Leon Anderson of California; two nieces, Lula Anderson and Martha Smith of Chicago; and other relatives including, Walter Crum of Vicksburg.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
DENNIECE H. MARTIN
BENTONIA Denniece H. Martin died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Heritage House in Vicksburg. She was 89.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Satartia Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by three sisters; and a great-grandson.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Martin Sr. of Bentonia; a son, Donald Martin Jr. of Bentonia; two daughters, Janelle Cook and Joann Butler, both of Vicksburg; a sister, Elizabeth Hamblin of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel in Yazoo City with the Rev. Darby Combs officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight and from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Keith Martin, J.J. Dunn, Sam Cararas, Martin Scarborough, Jeff Martin and Shon Berry.
