TOM CHAMBLESS

Tom Chambless died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson. He was 76.

A native of Batesville, Ark., Mr. Chambless had lived in Vicksburg for the past 30 years. He was the son of Houston Chambless and Gracie Harrell Chambless.

Mr. Chambless, a retired plumber, was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Adams of Nashville; one brother, Lloyd Passons of Bentonia; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

RUBY PRICE GASTON

CHICAGO Ruby Price Gaston died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Chicago. She was 75.

Mrs. Gaston was born in Claiborne County and later moved to Chicago where she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Gaston Sr.; one daughter, Malinda Gaston; her parents, Jasper and Emma Price; and one brother, Jasper Price Jr.

She is survived by five sons, Roosevelt Gaston Jr., Donnel Gaston, Jimmy Ray Gaston and Warren Gaston, all of Chicago, and Chester Gaston of Georgia; one daughter, Gale G. Davis of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, the Rev. Simon Price of Greenville; and seven sisters, Sadie P. Chillis of Greenville, Helen P. Cox of Vicksburg, Amy P. Flagg of Edwards, Carrie P. Taylor and Cedella P. Williams, both of Utica, Bertha P. Gibson of Fayetteville, N.C., and Bobbie P. Marshall of Aurora, Ill.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Union M.B. Church with the Rev. Phillip Burks officiating. Burial will follow at Second Union Church Cemetery.

Westhaven Funeral Home of Utica has charge of arrangements.

SOPHIE RHODES JOHNSTON

Sophie Rhodes Johnston died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. She was 88.

Mrs. Johnston was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg and had farming interests and a river excursion boat until 1972. She owned and operated the Sydney Building until the early 1980s and was a member of the Junior Auxiliary and the Magnolia Garden Club. She was also a member of the Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter E. Johnston Sr.; her parents, Henry Rhodes Sr. and Sophie Short Rhodes; and a brother, Henry Rhodes Jr.

Survivors include a sister, Ella Beth Selby of Clinton; four sons, Dr. Walter E. Johnston Jr., Sydney Johnston and Joseph Johnston, all of Vicksburg, and Henry Johnston of Diamondhead; 11 grandchildren; and friends, including Marion Coy of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating and the Revs. Tony Lalli and Sam Dunaway assisting. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 5 until 7 p.m. and from 1 p.m. Wednesday until the service at Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Frank Ferguson, Gene Selby Jr., Dr. Richard Johnston, Brian Johnston, Syd Johnston, A.J. Johnston, Jason Johnston and Scott Johnston.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Edward Animaddo, Susan Dunn, Bonnie Bruce and Ken Parks.
