New season brings out the people

As fall crept up on the calendar Monday, Rashad Gaines was seen through the iron fence of the Southern Cultural Heritage Complex mowing grass in the late afternoon. Rashad was helping his brother, Jermaine Gaines, and father, Alfred Ross, complete the task in one day. At right, Jim Kerns rides his recumbent bicycle on a side street off Clay Street after leaving the Vicksburg National Military Park. Kerns of Arkansas has been in Vicksburg for a month doing radiation surveys for Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. He said the bicycle is comfortable but the steering underneath the low seat takes some getting use to. “The biggest thing to get use to is the car noise at ear level,” he said. Quite a change from a couple of weeks ago, the high in the city Monday was 82 degrees, and the low was 62. (The Vicksburg Post/C. Todd Sherman)
