The Vicksburg Police Department is looking for some help with the Randy Naylor Summer Youth Program, Police Chief Walter Armstrong said Monday.
“We’re looking for people and businesses in the community who are interested in making donations so we can provide these kids with snacks and T-shirts,” he told the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
“Mutual Credit Union is helping us with what they call their ‘chip drive’ to help us get snacks for the kids who participate in the program, and we’re asking other people to help us out, too, with snacks or to help us get the T-shirts for the kids,” he said.
He said the program, which was named this year in honor of police detective, juvenile officer and constable Randy Naylor, who died Nov. 7, is in its fifth year, adding, “since we began the program in 2010, we’ve seen a reduction in the incidents of crime involving youth.”
Armstrong said the program will run from May 27 to July 2 and is open to young people ages 7 to 18. Registration is $10 per child and must be paid in advance. Applications will be at all schools in the city and the Vicksburg Police Department.
“We’ll have activities Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 10 p.m.,” he said. “The program for ages 7 to 12 will be at Warren Central Junior High, and 13 to 18 will be at Vicksburg Junior High. The program will end July 2 with a cookout at the (City Park) pavilion.”
He said the program is scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m., “because when they’re through, the kids are too tired to do anything but go to bed.”
Armstrong said people who want more information about the program or are interested in making a donation are asked to call the police department at 601-636-2511. He said people can make food donations for snacks at any Mutual Credit Union branch. Financial donations must be made at the police department, and all checks must be made out to the Vicksburg Police Department.
