ALENE ENGLISH

NEWELLTON Alene English died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at River Region Medical Center. She was 58.

Mrs. English was born in Newellton and worked as a bookkeeper at Tensas Co-Op Gin for 25 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, James Travis English; two daughters, Leigh Anne Tisdale of West Monroe, La., and Jamie English of Newellton; three sisters, Mervia Walters of Newellton, Beatrice Thornton of Longview, Texas, and Christine McKinstry of Quitman, La.; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah with the Rev. Woodie Rimes officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Preston Lane, Art Stevens, Britt Keahey, Darrell Vandeven, Jimmy Dale White and Wayne Neuroth.

DAVID MONROE SR.

PORT GIBSON David “Bay” Monroe Sr. died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at River Region Medical Center. He was 72.

Mr. Monroe was a Port Gibson resident. He was a member of Greater St. Mark Church.

He had operated a landscaping business in California and owned Dave’s Place in Port Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Monroe; his mother, Louise Buck; a brother, Joseph Monroe; and a sister, Ida Mae Shinall.

Mr. Monroe is survived by his wife, Evelyn Monroe of Port Gibson; three sons, David Monroe Jr. of Brookhaven, Charles Monroe and Carlos Monroe, both of Port Gibson; four daughters, Ruby Dee, Bettye Edwards and Evelyn D. Monroe, all of Port Gibson, and Victoria Ward of Naperville, Ill.; a brother, Robert Buck of Cleveland, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greater St. Mark M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating. Burial will be at the Carbondale Cemetery in the Westside community.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Monday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. and from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the church.

HULBERT T. NOWELL

BOLTON Hulbert T. Nowell died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home in Bolton. He was 85.

Born in Louisville, Mr. Nowell graduated from East Central Junior College and Millsaps College. He was a retired chemical engineer for Gulf Oil Corp.

Mr. Nowell was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church in Natchez. He taught math and science at Byram High School and served as a Boy Scout troop leader in Vicksburg.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dona N. Granger; his parents, L.D. and Mary Wilson Nowell; five brothers, Irvin Nowell, Marvin Nowell, Robert Nowell, Arthur Nowell and Harvey Nowell; and two sisters, Lillie N. Harp and Gillye N. Stokes.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Wahl Nowell of Bolton; three sons, Wayne T. Nowell of Vicksburg, Ralph E. Nowell of Natchez and Richard H. Nowell of Pearl; one daughter, M. Elaine Nowell of Bolton; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl with the Revs. Booth Poole and Cliff Whitlock officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Kingston United Methodist Church Building Fund in Natchez.
