[10/15/03]BILOXI TV Land’s slogan for back-to-back airings of their retro shows is “Twice as nice.”

The Biloxi Lady Indians played their version of “Twice as nice” with some old-school style softball while turning back Warren Central by scores of 8-1 in both ends of a double header. The losses eliminated Warren Central from the state playoffs.

Defense, and then some more defense, are what the Lady Indians pride themselves on.

“We have executed well with the glove all year, not beating ourselves,” Biloxi coach Tommy Johnson said.

The Lady Indians (20-3), behind Tara Junkert, committed just two errors and allowed no walks in the two games.

Biloxi won the first game behind Junkert and Harmony Dedeaux, who led the Lady Indians with two hits.

Warren Central senior Keisha Blue led the Lady Vikes with a double and a single.

“Our girls were focused on the first game. They have disciplined themselves to not look ahead,” Johnson said. “That’s been our motto all year, that the next game we play is the most important one of the year.”

Biloxi burst open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning with a 3-0 advantage.

Jeana Erickson added an inside-the-park home run with a drive down the left field line, and the rout was on.

“I was nervous, but I got over it after a while,” Erickson said. “We played our game and we didn’t make mistakes.”

The Lady Vikes finished the season with a 17-12 record, despite having lost nine players from last year’s team.

“We lost nine players and seven starters from last year’s club,” WC coach Lucy Young said.

“Our girls worked hard from the first day.”

WC finished second in the division behind Natchez, something for the young Lady Vikes to build upon.

“We have been the underdog all year,” WC’s Candice McKay said. “Nobody gave us much of a chance, but we just kept playing hard and we made it to the playoffs.”
