Mary Willis Murphy

Mary Willis Murphy died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 83.

Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion No. 3 M.B. Church, where she had been an usher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Murphy; her parents, Alex Willis and Rosie Monroe Willis; and one brother, George Walton.

She is survived by her stepdaughter, Dorothy Woodson of Chicago; and two brothers, Ples Williams Jr. of Urbana, Ill., and Percy Williams of Vicksburg.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Arthur Pendleton Jr.

Arthur “Co-Oil” Pendleton Jr. died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 68.

Mr. Pendleton was a self-employed mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Pendleton and Marie Bland Smith; three brothers, Isaac King, Willie Smith and Eddie Smith; and his sister, Lillie Jackson.

Mr. Pendleton is survived by his son, Jarbis Jackson of Las Vegas; four daughters, Carolyn Wells and Valerie Newton, both of Vicksburg, Yolanda Bailey of Columbus, Ga., and Lillian Webb of Jackson; four sisters, Lou Emma Moore of Vicksburg, Gertrude Smith and Susie Butterfield, both of Newellton, La., and Marie Becks of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Arthur Slaughter

Services for Arthur Slaughter will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas J. Moreland officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m.

Mr. Slaughter died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Mississippi State Veterans Hospital in Jackson. He was 86.

Mr. Slaughter was a native of Vicksburg and returned to Vicksburg in 1978 after living in Detroit for more than 40 years. He worked for the Chrysler Corporation for 30 years.

He was in the Army during World War II and received the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, a Silver Battle Star and a Good Conduct Medal while serving in Central Europe, Southern France and Northern Africa.

Mr. Slaughter was a member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee Strong Slaughter; his parents, Albert and Lucy Wilson Slaughter; two sisters; and two brothers.

He is survived by his sister Eva Slaughter Havard of Detroit; his brother, Alexander Slaughter of Vicksburg; his stepdaughter, Nettie Rose Ravick of Silver Springs, Md.; nieces and nephews; and other friends and relatives including Lena Slaughter, Leona Slaughter, Eva Slaughter Gladys Sims Cross, Thelma Sims Dukes, Velma Sims Hardwick and the Williams, Sims, Price, Smith and West families of Vicksburg.
