Dorothy Jean Allen Humphrey
FAYETTE Dorothy Jean Allen Humphrey died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at her home. She was 68.
Mrs. Humphrey was a member of the Jefferson County Women’s Auxiliary and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and was Fayette’s first black female alderman.
Mrs. Humphrey received a bachelor’s degree in music from Rust College and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Alcorn State University.
A retired medical outreach counselor of Jefferson County Comprehensive Health Agency, Mrs. Humphrey was a former school board member of the Jefferson County Board of Education. She was also a retired teacher with DeSoto County and Jefferson County Public School districts. She was an advocate of domestic violence against women and served as assistant librarian at J.D. Boyd Library at Alcorn State University.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Roosevelt Humphrey Jr.; one son, Charles Humphrey III; her parents, Micheal L. Allen and Annie Elizabeth McGee; and one grand-daughter, Reva Johnson.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Lott of Camden, Ark.; Tara Chambers of Vicksburg and Verna Grimes of Fayette; two sisters, Lillie Beard of Chicago, Ill., and Elmira Slaughter of Jackson; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one godson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mariah Baptist Church in Fayette with the Rev. Larry Jackson officiating. The procession will leave at 1:45 p.m. Sunday from 645 Main St.
Visitation will be from noon until 5 p.m. today at Rollins Chapel with a wake following at 6 p.m.
Burial will be at Jessamine Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Reed, Rickey Banks Jr., Willia A. Fells, Robert Lett, Tony Bailey Jr. and Ronnie Trevillion. Honorary pallbearers will be Julian Lott, Keith Chambers, Ellis Grimes, John Jackson, Robert Pointer, J.T. Wiley, Bobby Slaughter and Charles Spinks.
Emma Lee Smith
Emma Lee Smith died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 81.
A resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Smith was a member of King David No. 1 M.B. Church and was a retired beautician.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Smith Sr.; a son, John L. Smith Jr.; her parents, Charles Robinson Sr. and Emma Lee Robinson; three brothers, Eugene Robinson, William Robinson and Tom Robinson; and a sister, Bertha Reed.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Smith of Vicksburg and William H. Smith of Dover, Del.; a daughter, Delores L. Nichols of Vicksburg; a brother, Charles Robinson Jr. of Flint, Mich.; three sisters, Mary L. Hawks of Rockford, Ill., Gloria R. Davenport of Vicksburg and June Griffin of Rockfork, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at King David No. 1 M.B. Church with the Rev. Stevie Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
