Vicksburg beats Tupelo in 11 innings, 10-9

[3/2/03]Vicksburg High stayed unbeaten on the year with a pair of victories on Saturday over Tupelo and Prattville, Ala.

Vicksburg improved to 3-0 and will play Ridgeland in a makeup game on Monday at Clinton before taking on Warren Central on Tuesday.

In the opener, Justin Henry had a two-run home run in the top of the 11th, and then retired the Golden Wave in the bottom of the inning for a 10-9 win.

“This is a very big win for this team,” Vicksburg coach Jamie Creel said.

Tupelo took a 5-0 lead after the second inning, but the Gators scored five in the fourth, but ended up trailing 8-5 going into the seventh inning.

Vicksburg scored three in the seventh, the tying run coming on a passed ball, to send the game into extra innings.

Josh McBride, Justin Henry, Justin Boler and Paul Gorney each had two hits in the win, while Steven Price and James Jackson each had a double.

In the nightcap, the Gators scored three times in the third inning and erased a 2-0 deficit to Prattville.

John Hendrix pitched 6 1/3 innings and Adam Logue came on in relief for Vicksburg.

Matt Middleton had a two-RBI single, while McBride and Henry each had an RBI single.

WC 8, McGil-Toolan 1

Warren Central collected its first win of the young season Saturday with an 8-1 decision over McGil-Toolan of Mobile, Ala., in the Mid-Mississippi Classic.

Earlier in the day, the Vikings (1-4) lost to Morton, 5-3.

Zach Balthrop pitched six innings to get the win over McGil-Toolan and Vaughn Mims had a pair of doubles and scored twice to lead the Vikings’ offense.

Jeremy Ferguson had a pair of hits and Tom Corbin smacked a double.

Warren Central took a 4-0 lead into the third inning and scored twice in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

In the opener, Mims had an RBI triple and Greg Carroll had an RBI double, but Warren Central managed only three hits in the loss.

James Harris’ three-run home run in the sixth inning gave Morton a 5-2 lead.

Ferguson was charged with the loss.

Rain has played havoc on all the schools so far this season. St. Aloysius’ game scheduled for Tuesday against Bogue Chitto at Warren Central will be on Monday at 5 p.m. at Bazinsky Field.

WC coach Randy Broome said he hoped to get some time today and Monday to do work on soggy Viking Field.
