Geneva McGraw Abernathy

BOLTON Geneva McGraw Abernathy died Monday, May 19, 2003, at her home. She was 96.

A native of Forrest, La., Mrs. Abernathy was the daughter of the late Angus and Sarah Bowering McGraw. She lived most of her life in Bolton and was a former resident of Vicksburg and Long Beach. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Gulfport.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by her husband, Julius P. Abernathy Jr.; a son, Perry Abernathy; and five brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances A. Cross of Vicksburg and Florene A. Simmons of Long Beach; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Ivey, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Bolton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Abernathy’s nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Daniel Edney, Dr. Donald Hall and the employees of Patient Choice Hospice and Stay Home Health Care.

O’Neal Chambers

PORT GIBSON O’Neal Chambers of Port Gibson died Friday, May 16, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 92.

Mr. Chambers was a member and deacon at Rose Hill Christian Church in Port Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Chambers and Drucilla Walker-Chambers; a son, O’Neal Chambers Jr.; three brothers, Louis Chambers, Martin Chambers and Carl Chambers; and two sisters, Maggie Chambers-Braxton and Jeanette Wyatt.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Chambers of Port Gibson; three daughters, Felecia Chambers-Harried of Port Gibson, Viola Andrews of Altadena, Calif., and Bobbie Bryson of Shaw, Miss.; two brothers, Wallace Chambers of Akron, Ohio, and George Chambers of Boston; three sisters, Brybenia Wyatt of Port Gibson and Leona Washington and Geneva Taylor, both of Jackson; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Hill Christian Church with Walter Chambers officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 today at Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson and from noon Wednesday until the service at the church.

Jesse Lee McGloster

Jesse Lee McGloster died Monday, May 19, 2003, at his home. He was 54.

A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. McGloster was an Army veteran and of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse McGloster and Lizzie Bland McGloster; a brother, Clarence McGloster; and his grandparents, Nellie Dorsey and Pete Bland.

Survivors include two daughters, Nicole McGloster of Vicksburg and Elease McCullum of Milwaukee, Wis.; one brother, Lucius Jackson Jr. of Vicksburg; a sister, Mary McGloster of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Susie Lacy and Mary McCalpin, both of Vicksburg, and Atline Bailey of Russum, Miss.

Rosie Lee Carter Turner

Rosie Lee “Rose” Carter Turner died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 41.

Mrs. Turner was born in Vicksburg to the late James Jerry Carter Sr. and Vera Marie Sykes Carter. She graduated from Warren Central High School and Hinds Community College School of Nursing.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witness and was employed with Trace Haven Nursing Home.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Turner; a son, Timothy Leon Turner of Vicksburg; a daughter, Tiffany LeOnjala Turner of Vicksburg; a stepdaughter, Demetris “DeeDee” Neal of Vicksburg; three sisters, Joan Carter Davis, Jeanette Carter Peters and Sirlinar Carter Sutton, all of Vicksburg; five brothers, James Carter Jr., Edwin Carter, Curtis Carter and Carl Carter, all of Vicksburg, and Charles Carter of Greensboro, N.C.; three stepgrandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Eva Mae Ward

VALLEY PARK Eva Mae Ward died Monday, May 19, 2003, at her home. She was 85.

Born in Vicksburg, Mrs. Ward lived most of her life in the Oak Ridge Community. She had lived in Valley Park for the past 10 years. She was a retired nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital and a member of the Vicksburg Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mann Ward; six brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Clay of Valley Park; a brother, J.W. Hearn of Vicksburg; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Lalli officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Douglas Hearn, Rusty Clay, Bob Harrison, Buddy Terrell, Anthony Hearn and Denton Stokes.
