Charles Curtis Floyd

EDWARDS Charles Curtis “C.C.” Floyd died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, in Kosciusko, Miss. He was 85.

Born in Magee, Miss., Mr. Floyd was a resident of Edwards. He was an Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. He began farming after serving in the military.

Mr. Floyd was a member of Edwards United Methodist Church, where he served as president of the board and the Methodist Men’s Club. He was commissioner of the Hinds County Soil and Water Conservation District Board for more than 15 years, and he served on the ASCS committee and the Farm Bureau Board.

In 1970, he was awarded the Soil Conservation Society of America’s award as the Outstanding Conservation Farmer in Mississippi, and in 1972 and 1980 he was recognized as the Outstanding Conservation Farmer in Hinds County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Floyd; and a son, Wilson S. Floyd.

Survivors include a son, Charles Gordon Floyd of Edwards; a brother, Lomax Floyd of Jackson; a sister, Wilma Lee McLelland of Clinton; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street. Burial will follow at Edwards Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday and at 10 a.m. Friday.

Carrie Griffin

Carrie Griffin died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 105.

A resident of Vicksburg, Ms. Griffin was a retired homemaker. She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include Ada Ringold of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Robert L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Betty F. Gugert

Betty F. Gugert, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, in Fort Myers, Fla. She was 83.

Mrs. Gugert was born in New Orleans to Harold Godwin and Marie Camors Faust. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College, Tulane University. She received a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She settled with her husband in Vicksburg, where she worked for the Mississippi Welfare Department of Social Services for more than 10 years.

Mrs. Gugert was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harold Faust; a sister, Suzanne Faust; her husband, Frank “Jun” Gugert Jr.; and two sons, Frank Gugert III and Tom Gugert.

She is survived by a sister, Lucille Haynes of Fort Myers; four sons, Hand Gugert and Michael Gugert, both of California, George Gugert of Indiana and Gerald Gugert of New York; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Alvis Adron Lester

OAK GROVE Alvis Adron Lester died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at West Carroll Memorial Hospital in Oak Grove. He was 85.

A retired automotive mechanic, Mr. Lester was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Oak Grove. He co-operated Holley & Lester Auto Repair in Oak Grove, then owned and operated Lester’s Automatic Transmission Service until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Lester was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 97th Bomb Group in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Thomas-Tyson Post 3977.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Anne Lester; his father, Edd Horace Lester; and his mother, Myra Gertrude Lester.

Survivors include two sons, Edd Lester and Jim Lester, both of West Monroe; two nephews; two nieces; and other relatives and friends.

Services were at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Oak Grove with Dr. Jeff Jinks and the Rev. Herbert Whitten officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Mercer, Jimmy Melton, Fred Bolding, Roger Bolding, Clay Robertson and Kenny Nix.
