Dr. Corinne Taylor Carpenter

GRAMBLING, La. Dr. Corinne Taylor Carpenter died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003. She was 87.

A Vicksburg native, Dr. Carpenter received a bachelor of science degree in secretarial science from Tennessee State University in Nashville. She began working at Alcorn A&M University in 1940, serving as an administrator and faculty member for 20 years. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1960.

She earned a master of science degree and a doctorate in business education from Indiana University. She joined the Department of Business as assistant professor at Grambling State University, where she was again selected Teacher of the Year, in 1973. She co-authored the “College Typewriting” textbook.

Dr. Carpenter was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Links Inc. She helped establish the American Association of University Professors at Grambling. She was a member of the Grambling United League of Voters, Pi Omega Pi, Delta Mu Delta, Alpha Kappa Mu, Delta Pi Epsilon and Pi Lambda Theta.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pink Taylor; a sister, Eloise Taylor Clem; and a daughter, Ivel Adair Craddock.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Aaron C. Carpenter of Grambling; a stepson, William E. Carpenter of Jackson; a stepdaughter, Aryian C. Boswell of Montgomery, Ala.; and other relatives and friends.

Services were Nov. 25 at Lewis Temple C.M.E. Church in Grambling. Burial followed at Grambling Memorial Gardens under the direction of Miller Funeral Home.

Lester Owen Flowers

EDWARDS Lester Owen Flowers died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at his home in Edwards. He was 80.

Mr. Flowers was born in Learned and had lived in Hinds County all of his life. He retired from the Hinds County Public Works Department and was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II. He was a member of Cayuga United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Flowers and Gerald C. Flowers; three sisters; and one brother.

He is survived by his wife, Hattie Gene Flowers of Edwards; four sons, William Henry Flowers and Darrell Flowers, both of Edwards, Wiley Flowers of Vicksburg and Lester Ray Flowers of Utica; two daughters, Mary Goza of Edwards and Margaret Lynn Bolls of Longview, Texas; and 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Hinds County.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Robert E. Lee Sr.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. Robert E. Lee Sr. died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Hennipee County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. He was 65.

A former resident of Warren County, Mr. Lee lived in Golden Valley, Minn. He was a former cook for Merchant Company in Vicksburg and retired as a cook for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mat Sinking Unit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nancy Lee; two sons, Robert Lee Jr., and Jimmy Lee; a stepson, Eunice Combs; a daughter, Ora Lee; and two sisters, Nellie Brooks and Martha Lee.

Survivors include two sons, John Lee of Minneapolis and Jarrod Lee of Vicksburg; four daughters, Nancy Watkins and Janice Lee, both of Minneapolis, and Krystal Lee and Nicole Lee, both of Vicksburg; two stepdaughters, Mary McClain Russell of Minneapolis and Florence Spates Slaughter of Dallas, Texas; four stepsons, Dennis McClain of Jackson, Tommy Spates and Sgt. William Combs, both of Vicksburg, and Nathaniel Combs of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Eula Mae Phelps

Eula Mae Phelps died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She was 63.

Born in Glen Allan, Mrs. Phelps had been a resident of Vicksburg most of her life. She retired in December 2002 from the United Way. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Horace Abney; a sister, Barbara Greenland; and three brothers, Larry Abney, James Abney and Samuel Abney.

Mrs. Phelps is survived by her husband, Loyd Phelps Jr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Tracy Eleanor Phelps of Vicksburg; a son, Loyd Phelps III of Vicksburg; her mother, Ruby C. Abney of Vicksburg; five sisters, Sue Stevens, Martha Joy Stephens and Carolyn Ellerbee, all of Vicksburg, Mary Jane Dodson of Utica and Elizabeth Baylot of Houston, Texas; and three brothers, Van Abney of Vicksburg, Tanner Abney of Yazoo City and Bobby Abney of Horn Lake.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Redbone United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dwight Sibley, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Blake McWhorter, Dean Abney, Paul Baylot Jr., Mike Abney, Dusty Ross and Lee Stevens.

Curley Sanders Jr.

Curley Sanders Jr. died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at his home. He was 61.

Mr. Sanders was a resident of Vicksburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curley Sanders Sr. and Mozella Sanders.

Survivors include two sisters, Lenora Sanders and Ivera Reed Kelly, both of Vicksburg; and nieces and nephews.
