Philip J. Vedros Jr.

A Mass of the Resurrection for Philip J. Vedros Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. James O’Riordan officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home with Knights of Columbus prayers at 7:15 and rosary at 7:30.

Mr. Vedros died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 77.

A native of Gramercy, La., Mr. Vedros was the son of the late Philip J. and Solange Melancon Vedros. Mr. Vedros moved to Vicksburg in 1951, after serving as a Marine in World War II.

He was a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Soils and Pavement Division at Waterways Experiment Station for 31 years before retiring in 1981.

Mr. Vedros was a charter member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where he served as chairman of the building committee. He was also a past president of the St. Aloysius “A” Club and a school board member.

Since his retirement, he served as president of the Warren County Parks and Recreation Commission.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Loviza Vedros; and a brother, Julian Barry Vedros.

Mr. Vedros is survived by three daughters, Mary V. Stewart and Joanne V. Wright, both of Vicksburg, and Maureen C. Vedros of Long Beach; three sons, Philip J. Vedros III and Stephen M. Vedros, both of Vicksburg, and Mark G. Vedros of Madison; eight sisters, Beverly Lancaster of Tallulah, Wanda Jackson of New Orleans, Lorraine Oubre of Lutcher, La., Carolyn Laurent of Destrehan, La., Mary Ellen Vedros of Baton Rouge, Ina Claire Gunter of Gretna, La., Eleanor Vincent of Harvey, La., and Jenny Vedros of Diamondhead; three brothers, Ralph Vedros of Fox Run Island, Wash., Dr. Neylan Vedros of Haraldsburg, Calif., and George Vedros of Covington, La.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be John Michael Stewart, Zachary Ryan Vedros, Joseph R. Curro III, Christopher Curro, Gregory Curro, Jerome Curro, Judge Michael Lancaster and Edgar Hunter Lancaster III.

Honorary pallbearers will be Council 898 Knights of Columbus members, Warren County Parks and Recreation Commission employees and employees and fellow golfers of Clear Creek Golf Course.

Memorials may be made to the Vicksburg Catholic School Vedros Family Trust, 1900 Grove St., Vicksburg.
