[08/20/03] Porters Chapel Academy’s Lauren Johnson and Deer Creek’s Mary Margaret Barnett played on the same softball tournament team this summer.
On Tuesday, the duo were back on the same field but in different uniforms.
Johnson threw a 2-hitter, but two errors and a passed ball allowed three Deer Creek runs to score in a 3-2 win over the Lady Eagles (7-2).
“The two games we’ve lost this year, that’s been our story,” PCA coach Kevin Griffin said of the Eagles’ miscues. “We’re already in ballgames, but we can’t win if we keep giving up unearned runs.”
All of Deer Creek’s runs were manufactured. Only two batted balls made it out of the infield.
In the first inning, Johnson struck out leadoff batter Heather Greer, but the third strike was dropped allowing her to reach first base safely.
A stolen base, wild pitch and a Nicole Fontenot RBI groundout gave Deer Creek (8-5) a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles bounced back in the third with a single by Ashley Johnson and an RBI double by Lauren Johnson to tie the game. Johnson then stole third and the throw sailed into left field allowing Johnson to score for a 2-1 PCA lead.
Lauren Irby led off the fourth inning with a walk and moved to third thanks to a bunt single by McKenzie McIntire and a sacrifice bunt by Jenny Smyly. Irby scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
Deer Creek took the lead for good in the top of the seventh as Greer ripped a single. She stole second and advanced to third on an error. Barnett’s sacrifice fly scored Greer for the 3-2 win.
Barnett retired the Lady Eagles in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“We’re short a couple players and when you take them out of our lineup, we’re not the same,” Deer Creek coach Bart Boykin said. “That last inning, we manufactured a run and that’s how we had to win.”
Warren Central 15, Yazoo City 8
Tranyce Peoples hit a three-run home run and had four RBIs to lead Warren Central (2-1) over Yazoo City on Tuesday.
Keisha Blue scattered four hits over seven innings to take the win on the mound.
Warren Central scored in every inning except the third, and had seven hits.
