Deer Creek knocks PCA from playoff race

[10/18/03]Porters Chapel (3-6, 2-3 Conference 5-A) ended its hopes of making the playoffs with a 47-0 loss to Deer Creek. The loss dropped PCA two games behind both Briarfield and Tallulah with one to play.

Deer Creek returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown, and jumped on top of the Eagles 18-0 less than four minutes into the game. By halftime, Deer Creek led 33-0.

The Warriors (7-2, 4-2) had five TDs that covered 20 yards or more.

“Obviously, we came out flat and we stayed flat. It wasn’t a very good game,” PCA coach Bubba Mims said.

PCA quarterback Ryan Hoben was 9-for-23 passing for 100 yards, with two interceptions. Humphrey Barlow led the Eagles on defense with 15 tackles, while Gerald Mims had 12 tackles.

Sharkey-Issaquena 24, Briarfield 8

Chase Mahalitc ran for 115 yards and a touchdown to lead Sharkey-Issaquena (6-3, 3-2 Conference 5-A) to an upset of Briarfield (7-2, 4-1).

Briarfield led 8-6 at halftime, following a 51-yard touchdown pass from Drew Manning to Montellus Craft and a two-point conversion in the second quarter.

But SIA ran for three second-half TDs by Robert Wilson, Mahalitc and Brett Stevens for the win.

Tallulah Acad. 40, Humphreys 0

Cole Grissom ran for two touchdowns as Tallulah pounded the ball for 452 rushing yards against Humphreys.

Cade Marsh led all rushers with 200 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Dukes added 142 rushing yards and a TD.

Trinity 67, Tensas 0

Chase Brown ran for 139 yards and three TDs as Trinity lit up the scoreboard for 60 points in the second half.

Doug Lee Guice caught 11 passes for 84 yards with two touchdowns (20, 5) and added another score with a 33-yard interception return.

Rebul 12, Veritas 7

Cody Sullivan threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mike Shaw with 2:07 to play in the game, giving Rebul a come-from-behind win over Veritas. Sullivan also ran for an 8-yard score earlier in the fourth quarter, made 20 tackles, and gained 113 yards on 16 carries.

Adam Kitchens added 103 rushing yards and 13 tackles, and Craig Flowers also had 13 tackles for Rebul (7-2), which will finish its season next week at Tri-County.

Hinds AHS 42, McLaurin 27

Austin Divinity ran for three touchdowns and passed for another to help Hinds AHS rally from a 21-8 halftime deficit. The War Dawgs (7-1, 3-0 Region 6-2A) outscored McLaurin (2-6, 1-2) 34-6 in the second half.

Albert Williams ran for 144 yards and a touchdown for Hinds AHS, while Carl Carson had two fumble recoveries and returned an interception 15 yards for a score. Divinity also ran for a two-point conversion and passed for another to account for 28 of Hinds AHS’ 42 points.
