Klara Sally Rev Koock

Klara Sally Rev Koock, Mississippi artist, died Monday, March 10, 2003. She was 86.

Mrs. Koock was born in New York and moved to Birmingham, Ala., in 1948 with her husband. They moved to Ocean Springs in 1967. She had lived at Heritage House since 2001.

She graduated from the Pratt Art Institute, where she majored in illustration and later taught fashion illustration. She also attended the University of Alabama and Louisiana Tech University. She taught and participated in art workshops, including Arrowmont School in Tennessee.

Mrs. Koock was featured in books by Bill Aron and Patti Carr Black. She was a charter member of Ocean Springs Art Association, serving as president more than once. She was a member of the Vicksburg Art Association, Friends of Walter Anderson, Art Wave and the Singing River Art Association, winning awards in each organization.

Among other places, she had frequent shows at Vicksburg’s Attic Gallery. Her etching, “Never Again,” was presented to former Israeli Prime Minister Menachim Begin. Her oil painting, “Parade of the Patriarchs,” hangs in Biloxi at Congregation Beth Israel, where she was a member. Her work was included in the Mississippi Museum of Art’s new gallery in 1978.

Mrs. Koock was honored by B’nai B’rith’s George H. Altbach unit during Jewish Women’s History Month in 2001.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Berger Koock.

She is survived by one son, Victor Ivan Koock of New Orleans; one daughter, Lesley Koock Silver of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Deborah Silver, Lisa Silver, Barrie Koock Stevens and Greg Koock; and a great-grandchild, Isadora Stevens.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Attic Gallery.

Jonathon Wayne McCandlish

EPPS, La. Jonathon Wayne McCandlish died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at LSU/ E.A. Conway Medical Center in Monroe, La. He was 21.

Born in Delhi, La., Mr. McCandlish was a resident of Epps, La.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Phillip McCandlish.

Survivors include his wife, Brandy McCandlish of Epps; his parents, Kindle and Tina McCandlish of Epps; a brother, Dustin McCandlish of Epps; his paternal grandmother, Rose McCandlish of Epps; his maternal grandparents, Douglas and Ellen Fairchild of Epps; and other relatives.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Epps Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Joyner and Lee Piercy officiating. Burial will follow at Epps Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Delhi.

Pallbearers will be Glen McCandlish, Thomas Simpkins, Mike Hall, Craig Freeman, Chris Weems and Shae Lockwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Green and Jon Jon Boyte.

Rhonda Elaine Ragan

NEW ORLEANS Rhonda Elaine Ragan died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, as a result of a car accident. She was 29.

A former resident of Vicksburg, Ms. Ragan had lived in New Orleans for 10 years. She was a graduate of Warren Central High School and attended Dillard University in New Orleans. She gave piano and voice lessons and was a member of Mount Zion M.B. Church in Ballground.

Survivors include a son, Rowan Elliott Ragan of Redwood; her parents, Melvin and Ora Ragan of Redwood; two brothers, Melvin Allen Ragan of Redwood and Lewis Edward Ragan of Vicksburg; three sisters, Jacqueline Ragan of Union City, Ga., Shirley Ragan Torregano of Slidell, La., and Earnestine Ragan Sisney of Vicksburg; a grandmother, Earnestine Luckett of Redwood; and other relatives.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion M.B. Church in Ballground. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Sunday at the church.

Bobby G. Smith

FLORENCE Bobby G. “Bob” Smith died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Fulton, Miss. He was 70.

A lifelong resident of Florence, Mr. Smith was a graduate of Florence High School and Hinds Junior College. He was a member of Cleary Baptist Church and was a retired equipment operator for Mississippi Power & Light.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isiah and Eva Smith; and two brothers, Claude Smith and Tom Ray Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Taylor Smith; two daughters, Pam Dorrell of Vicksburg and Terrie Whatley of Florence; a sister, Willie Frances Jones of Florence; four grandsons; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cleary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Sinai Cemetery in Florence.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl.

Pallbearers will be Tim Taylor, Milton Smith, Glynn Jones, Ronnie Jones, Thomas Humphreys and Scott Humphreys.

Rosanna Woods

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Services for Rosanna “Cooter” Woods will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Union Baptist Church in Utica. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Williams Funeral Service.

Mrs. Woods died Friday, March 7, 2003, in Jacksonville, Fla. She was 97.

A former resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Woods lived in Jacksonville, Fla. She was a homemaker and a former member of Second Union Baptist Church in Utica.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Woods; a son, Lee Andrew Woods; her parents, William and Leola Floyd; four brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Ethel M. Stribling of Toledo, Ohio; a sister, Annie M. Evans of Toledo; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives including Elsie McGowan of Vicksburg.
