[3/23/03]Vicksburg High battered five Oak Grove pitchers and belted 17 hits in a 14-2 blowout of the second-ranked Warriors.
James Jackson, who held Warren Central to only one run on Friday night, hit a pair of home runs and a single to pace the Gators’ offense explosion.
Vicksburg, which has not taken batting practice in five weeks, is hitting better than it has all season long.
“It’s just something we don’t do,” Gators’ coach Jamie Creel said. “The kids hit on their own if they want to.”
Matt Middleton had three singles, while Josh McBride, Justin Henry and Paul Gorney each had two singles. Justin Boler, who scattered five hits to take the win, had three singles, Steven Price had a home run and Jordan Henry had an RBI single.
Vicksburg scored five runs before Oak Grove could get an out in the first inning. The Gators added five in the second, one in the third and fourth and two in the fifth. The game was called after that because of the mercy rule.
“We’ve been hitting the ball very well and playing well as a team,” Creel said. “Things have been going our way, and I hope we continue to play hard.”
Vicksburg will play a key division game against Clinton at Bazinsky Field at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Madison 16, 8 WC 1, 5
One day after being battered by Vicksburg High, Warren Central took its lumps against Madison Central.
And with a game against powerful Northwest Rankin on Monday, the Vikings are trying to find some solutions.
“It’s back to the drawing board,” said WC coach Randy Broome after his team lost a doubleheader to Madison, 16-1 and 8-5. “I think we’re going to have a talk to the older guys to see what this whole thing means to them. I was proud of the young guys, they played a lot better.”
In the opener, Allen Carlisle singled in the first inning, then scored on a Tom Corbin sacrifice fly for the lone Viking run. It was also the last hit Warren Central had.
Madison scored three in the first, one in the second, seven in the third and five in the fourth. The game was called after the fifth inning.
In the second game, with the seniors on the bench, Warren Central battled to an 8-5 loss.
Josh Gordon took the loss.
Drew Warnock had two singles and an RBI, and Jake Turner belted a home run in the seventh inning.
The Vikings scored two runs in the seventh on a Will Mendrop RBI double and Warnock’s RBI single.
St. Aloysius 12, Magee 11
Alex Frisbee went 4-for-5 and had the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh as St. Al held off Magee.
Frisbee had an 0-2 count with the bases loaded and two outs when he punched a single over the right fielder’s head to score Kyle Richards.
The Flashes belted out 19 hits with Walker Hengst and Richards collecting three apiece. Charlie Amborn had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Jason Brown had a two-RBI single, and Drew Mazzanti had two hits and an RBI.
Frisbee got the win despite six Flashes’ errors.
St. Al held an 11-5 lead in the sixth inning, but Magee scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to tie the game.
