PORT GIBSON Donald Francis Mahoney died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home in Port Gibson. He was 75.

Born in New Orleans, Mr. Mahoney was a graduate of Loyola University. He served in the Army from 1946 until 1948 with the 790th Transportation Railway Operating Battalion in Pusan, Korea. He retired from Entergy at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, where he served as a quality assurance inspector. He had lived in Port Gibson for the past 28 years.

After retirement, he joined his wife as assistant director of the Christian Volunteer Service non-profit organization in Port Gibson. He served as an elder of New Christian Fellowship Church and was a member of the Lions Club. He participated in jail ministries in Port Gibson and Covington, La., for more than 25 years.

Mr. Mahoney was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette J. Mahoney of Port Gibson; two brothers, Daniel Mahoney of New Orleans and Joseph Mahoney of Metairie, La.; one sister, Joyce Osbourne of Mandeville, La.; three sons, Daniel Mahoney of Montgomery, Md., Kevin R. Mahoney of Port Gibson and Ernst M. Hirt of Yuma, Ariz.; three daughters, Sharon Puruffo of Austin, Texas, Robin Seistzinger of Potsville, Pa., and Heidi M. Kroptavich of Port Gibson; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Christian Fellowship Church with Pastor Randy Burge officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Pallbearers will be Mike Kroptavich, Mark Trevilion, James Pittman, Larry Shannon, Perry Hughes and Terry Miles.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob DeWitt, Bill Finnorn, Allen Burrell and Donald Little.

Nettie Carey Cook Martin

Nettie Carey Cook Martin died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was 91.

Mrs. Martin was born and reared in Pike County. She graduated in 1929 from Pike County Agricultural High School in Summit. In 1999, she was recognized at the 70th reunion of her class by the school, now Southwest Mississippi Community College.

She moved to Vicksburg in the early 1940s with her husband. She was employed at The Valley department store and McRae’s. She was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church, where she taught pre-Sunday school for a number of years.

A gardener, Mrs. Martin was a member of Eastern Star Faith Chapter No. 358. She served as Worthy Matron 1978-79 and 1984-85.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Roger Weill of Clinton; a son and daughter-in-law, T.J. and Carolyn Martin of Slidell, La.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Revs. Terry White and Ed Hightower officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dr. James Valentine, Joe McCormick, Dr. Ben Carnes, Ken Martin, Gaylan McGregor and Ron Goldman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eastern Star and Masonic chapter members and Adult 5 Sunday school class members.
