Marie Benard Allen

Services for Marie “Ree” Benard Allen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Travelers Rest Baptist Church, 718 Bowmar Ave., with the Rev. Thomas Bernard officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Mrs. Allen died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 83.

A native of Warren County, Mrs. Allen was a homemaker. She was a member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim Tolliver and Lenora Benard Evans; and a brother, Henry Tolliver.

Survivors include her husband, Paul T. Allen of Vicksburg; a stepson, Lee Paul Allen of Franklin, La.; a stepdaughter, Gloria Harvey of Tacoma, Wash.; and nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including Leaverne Brent, Cornelious Lee, Mark Burden, Angel Rhodes and the Benard, Sanders, Young, Smith and Allen families of Vicksburg.

Christine Jackson Chaney

TUPELO Christine Jackson Chaney died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was 94.

A lifelong resident of Tupelo, Mrs. Chaney was retired from the Mississippi State Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics and a retired legal secretary for Mitchell-Clayton Attorneys at Law.

She was a charter member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Elvis Presley Garden Club and the Homemakers Club. She had volunteered as a Gray Lady for the North Mississippi Medical Center for 28 years.

Mrs. Chaney was preceded in death by her husband, H.O. Chaney.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty C. Byrd of Grenada; three sons, Robert Chaney and Terry Chaney, both of Tupelo, and Sen. Mike Chaney of Vicksburg; a sister, Ruth Kraft of Sun City, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Revs. Don McCain and Hershel Wiygul officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Park in Verona, Miss.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors, 535 W. Jefferson Street in Tupelo.

Pallbearers will be Walter Burns, Winford Hudson, Max Harris, Jim Benson, Jimmy Langley, Buddy Palmer, John Crumby, Ray Wilkinson and Earl Kellum.

Honorary pallbearers will be her lady friends of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Louise Goode

Services for Louise Goode will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Bryant, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Goode died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 94.

Mrs. Goode was a native of Lovelady, Texas, and had been a Vicksburg resident for 60 years. She was the daughter of the late Clinton Elmer and Olive Spear McVey. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bernard Goode; a son, Tommy Goode; a brother, Elmer McVey; and a sister, Mildred Newton.

She is survived by a brother, Willis McVey of Austin, Texas; a sister, Dorothy McVey of Teague, Texas; two nieces, Anne Hanrahan of Longview, Texas, and Linda Chapman of Austin; and great-nieces and nephews.

Charlie Steele

Services for Charlie Steele will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Church in Bovina with the Rev. Tyrone Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hebron Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at Robbins Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Mr. Steele died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at his home. He was 81.

Mr. Steele was a lifelong resident of Warren County and lived in the Bovina community. He worked as a logger and was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Bovina. He was a member and former president of the local chapter of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Tommy Steele and George Steele; two daughters, Alice Faye Smith and JoAnn Steele; a sister, Carolina Hilton; and a brother, Sam Steele.

Survivors include his wife, Ledora Walker Steele; three daughters, Hazel Lou Wilson, Hazel Bell Christmas and Retha Mae Clark, all of Vicksburg; two sons, Charlie Steele Jr., of Chicago and Vernon Steele of Aurora, Ill.; a sister, Mary Bolls of Vicksburg; a brother, Isaiah Davis of Detroit; grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rev. Levi Thompson

PORT GIBSON The Rev. Levi Thompson died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at his home. He was 87.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, Hezekiah and Laura Thompson, and a brother, Ira Thompson.

He is survived by his sister, C.J. Warner of Jackson; cousins, including Elder T.E. Harris and Lee Ethel Claiborne, both of Port Gibson, and Carolyn Harris and Lillie R. Wade, both of Hermanville; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Hermanville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Port Gibson and from noon Saturday until the service at the church.
