Ethel Davis

NASHVILLE Ethel Davis died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Nashville. She was 81.

Born in Fayette, Ms. Davis was a resident of Nashville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Maggie Doss; two sons, Leroy Tenner Sr. and McArthur Davis; a brother, Alex Doss; and a sister, Clora Williams.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Mayes of Nashville; two sons, Timothy Davis of San Antonio, Texas, and Sidney Davis of Mountville, Pa.; four sisters, Dora Coleman and Mary Lee Fuller, both of Vicksburg and Sally Culbert and Louise Hunter, both of Fayette; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Fayette with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home of Natchez.

Lt. Gen. Carroll H. Dunn

ALEXANDRIA, Va. Carroll H. Dunn, a retired Army lieutenant general who was director of the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg from September 1952 until May 1955, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. He was 86.

Gen. Dunn, also head of the Defense Nuclear Agency from 1971 until retiring in 1973 and a construction consultant afterward, was a native of Lake Village, Ark.

He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Gen. Dunn oversaw some of the biggest military construction projects, including the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, several nuclear missile installations and improvements to the Arkansas River. He also was in charge of all military construction during a period of major buildup in Vietnam in the mid-1960s.

He had joined the Army Corps of Engineers in 1938 and during World War II was commander of a combat engineer battalion assigned to the 30th Division. He went from Omaha Beach deep into Germany and was wounded by an enemy mine.

He taught combat engineering at Fort Belvoir in the late 1940s, served in Tokyo and Vicksburg in the 1950s and in Washington as assistant to the chief of engineers.

In the early 1960s, he was director of the Titan II missile system construction. At the Defense Nuclear Agency, he oversaw nuclear weapons testing and management of the nuclear stockpile.

From 1968 until his retirement from the Army in 1973, he also was chairman of the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineers and the National Academy of Construction and a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Letha Jontz Dunn of Alexandria; a daughter, Carolyn Dean of Denver; a son, Carroll “Stretch” Jr. of Birmingham; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Louise Goode

Louise Goode died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 94.

Mrs. Goode was a native of Lovelady, Texas, and had been a Vicksburg resident for 60 years. She was the daughter of the late Clinton Elmer and Olive Spear McVey. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bernard Goode; a son, Tommy Goode; a brother, Elmer McVey; and a sister, Mildred Newton.

She is survived by a brother, Willis McVey of Austin, Texas; a sister, Dorothy McVey of Teague, Texas; two nieces, Anne Hanrahan of Longview, Texas, and Linda Chapman of Austin; and great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Bryant, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

William W. Ramsey

William W. “Bill” Ramsey died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson. He was 76.

An attorney, Mr. Ramsey was a lifelong Vicksburg resident and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, where he was an usher and a member of the Vestry Counsel.

A former member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, Mr. Ramsey was a former member of the Mississippi Board of Bar Commissioners, the International Society of Barristers, Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association.

He was former president of the Vicksburg Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Warren County Bar Association. He served two terms as president of the Central Industrial Development District and was voted by his peers as one of the best railroad attorneys in America in the 1997 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Mr. Ramsey served as vice chairman of the Mississippi Flyway Council Advisory Board and was a regional director of Ducks Unlimited. He was a charter member of the Mississippi Sportsmen’s Association and a member of the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. In 1993, he was honored as the first recipient of the Vicksburg Ducks Unlimited Sportsman of the Year Award.

He was preceded in death by his father, Judge Wallace Whitson Ramsey; his mother, Elsie Tucker Ramsey; a brother, James Basil Ramsey; and a sister, Marjorie Ramsey Brannon.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carolyn S. Ramsey; one daughter, Lynda Ramsey Bell of Baton Rouge; four sons, James Thomas Ramsey of Jackson, Bradley William Ramsey of Shreveport, La., William W. Ramsey Jr. and Robert S. Ramsey; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Holy Trinity with the Revs. Clifton McInnis and David Elliott officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Riles Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service in the Parish Hall of the church.

Pallbearers will be Dean Andrews, Jack Branning, German Jordan, Ike LaRue, Robert McConnell, Jim Newman, Bobby Robinson, William Shappley, Stan Terry, Lee Davis Thames, Ray T. Wade, Chick Warner, Jerry Nations, R.C. Wilkerson, Dick Ferguson, Bill Harris, Joe Harris, John Hennessey, Ernest Thomas, Mike Cappaert, Jack Stamm and members of the Warren County Bar Association.
