[12/3/03]Tiffany Hubbard almost had a night for the ages on Tuesday. She had to settle for a mere milestone.

Hubbard had the first triple-double by a Warren County player in nearly three years, with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. She just missed a quadruple-double with eight steals in leading Vicksburg High to a 64-51 win over Port Gibson.

The last Warren County player with a triple-double was Porters Chapel Academy’s E.J. Willis, who accomplished the feat against Trinity in January 2001.

“I wanted that game more. You lose to a team, you want to beat them,” Hubbard said, referring to VHS’ 49-46 loss to Port Gibson at the Coca-Cola Classic tournament in November. “That (triple-double) doesn’t even run through my mind. I see that in the NBA and the WNBA, but it never even crossed my mind.”

Hubbard was well on her way to the triple-double by halftime, but it took the Missy Gators a little longer to put away the Wavettes. Hubbard had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists at the break as the Missy Gators led by only five points, 30-25.

Early in the fourth quarter, Hubbard finished off the triple-double with a pair of assists and VHS finally finished off Port Gibson (4-4).

The Missy Gators started the period with a 10-0 run that increased their lead to 17 points, and they cruised from there. Hubbard capped the run with a steal and layup that made it 55-38 with 6:15 to play in the game.

Sedrick Williams scored 21 points and Vicksburg outlasted Port Gibson to win in a game of runs.

Cedric Parson added 11 points for VHS (5-3), while Jeremy Yates and Ryan Hedrick each had 12 for Port Gibson.

The teams traded five- and 10-point runs, as well as the lead, for the first three quarters until VHS pulled away late.

The Blue Waves (2-6) were 5-for-15 from 3-point range in the first three quarters, but just 2-for-8 in the fourth quarter.

Another brief swoon midway through the third quarter allowed VHS to open a 10-point lead that it never relinquished.

Port Gibson led 31-28 at halftime, but VHS opened the second half with a 10-0 run. The Waves battled back to cut it to 40-36, but Williams hit a 3-pointer with 2 minutes to play in the third quarter that put the Gators ahead 43-36, and they never trailed again.

“I thought we played well in spurts, but we just can’t seem to get together for a long period of time,” VHS coach Dellie Robinson said.
