(12/16/03)Vicksburg officials will begin a search for a new director of parks and recreation following the resignation of Craig Upton.

The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Monday to accept Upton’s resignation after two years in the position. Upton told the mayor and aldermen last week that he was leaving to sell insurance.

South Ward Aldermen Sid Beauman, who was the director of parks and recreation for eight years before running for alderman in 2001, said Upton had talked about working in the insurance industry for years.

“I’ve always found it interesting, and I had an opportunity,” Upton said.

Upton began working for the city in 1994 and was the assistant director under Beauman. He got the director’s job after Beauman was elected to the alderman’s post and was paid about $40,000 annually.

“I really have enjoyed working with him,” Beauman said. “I hate to see him go.”

Beauman said projects under way should continue. A softball complex off Halls Ferry Road, for example, is being designed by an outside firm. He also said a couple of people have already expressed interest in the job and that the city will advertise the job opening.

In other matters the city board:

Presented toys and clothing from city employees to the Salvation Army Angel Tree toy drive and food to the Community Pantry.

Heard award presentations from Main Street for the Christmas parade. Awards went to Beechwood Elementary, Rainbow Casino, The Vicksburg Post and Redwood

Elementary.

Received proposals for insurance.

Authorized the city clerk to advertise for bids for sidewalk improvements along Cherry, Washington, Railroad and First East streets and adjacent roads.

Approved a 1/4-page advertisement in Riverviews and News for $150.

Adopted an ordinance to regulate wireless communication towers and antennas.

Adopted a policy for use of the Jackson Street Community Center.

Entered an agreement with artist Robert Dafford, who will begin work in March on a city-funded mural depicting the history of black people in Vicksburg.

Accepted a grant under the Juvenile Accountability Incentive program.

Approved cutting and cleaning four overgrown state-owned properties and one private property.

Approved capital expenditures for $29,000 at the Vicksburg Convention Center and $4,950 at the City Auditorium.

Approved the claims docket.

The city board will meet again at 10 a.m. Dec. 24 at City Hall Annex.
