[10/9/03]Warren Central’s 10-2 victory over Cleveland on Wednesday meant little to each team’s season, but it did mean a lot to six Lady Vikes.

In the final home game of the season, Warren Central bid farewell to seniors Kristen Ashley, Kristen Baker, Keisha Blue, Candice McKay, Tranyce Peoples and Alicia Wright.

“I’m going to miss it a whole lot, playing in high school,” said Blue, who finished 2-for-4 hitting while giving up only two runs on the mound. “I hope the class after us steps up and does what we did to continue the season and start it off right.”

WC coach Lucy Young played all six players over the final three innings. Each contributed at least a hit or RBI in the game.

“It probably won’t hit me until we’re done with the playoffs, but hopefully we go a long way,” said McKay, who hit a double and a triple, driving in three runs in her final home game.

The Lady Vikes, who will travel to face Biloxi on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs, took the lead early with two runs in the second inning. Cleveland tied the game in the fourth, but it was the last time a Wildcat crossed the plate.

McKay led off the the bottom of the fourth with a triple and was knocked in on a sacrifice fly by Ashley. Tiffany Fuller, who reached base on an error, also later scored on an error for a 4-2 lead.

Cleveland’s defense then continued to fall apart.

The Wildcats committed six errors in the fifth inning, leading to six WC runs.

Blue started the inning with a single and was followed by a Cookie Johnson walk and a Peoples single to load the bases. Lauren Anderson then reached base on a dropped line drive, bringing in one run. McKay followed with a two-RBI double.

Another error allowed Anna Jones to reach second and Anderson to score. Baker singled in McKay, and a final error brought Jones home.

“I just felt like every player stepped up and played well,” Young said.
