GREENWOOD Alvin Earl Gibbs died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. He was 65.

Born in Karnack, Texas, Mr. Gibbs had lived in the Minter City community for the past 35 years. He graduated from Karnack High School and was a veteran of the Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley P. Gibbs of Greenwood; four sons, Matt Weldon of Greenwood and Ray Williams, Chris Williams and James Chris Williams, all of Vicksburg; three daughters, Rene Williams and Ann Sellers, both of Vicksburg, and Karen Gibbs of Crestview, Fla.; his father, Albert A. Gibbs of Greenwood; a brother, John D. Gibbs of Longview, Texas; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Green Acres Memorial Park in Vicksburg. Burial will follow under the direction of Williams & Lord Funeral Home of Greenwood.

Pallbearers will be Matt Weldon, Ray Williams, Chris Williams, Johnny Sellers and James Chris Williams.

Onis Woodrow Grissom Sr.

ST. JOSEPH Onis Woodrow Grissom Sr. died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003. He was 85.

A lifelong farmer, Mr. Grissom was born in Itawamba County. He moved to St. Joseph from Hayti, Mo., in 1965 and to Clinton in 2002 to live with his son. He was also a hunter and a grader operator.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Parilee Grissom; a son, Onis Grissom Jr.; eight brothers and one sister.

He is survived by a son, Larry Grissom of Clinton; a sister, Lola Robinson of Waco, Texas; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; friends and other relatives, including Arritia Grissom of St. Joseph.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Beardon officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tallulah.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Johnnie James

Johnnie “Whop” James died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 49.

Mr. James was of the Baptist faith. He was formerly employed with Bunge North America.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Walton and Hattie Haynes.

Survivors include a brother, Calvin White of Vicksburg; a sister, Juliet Maxey of Vicksburg; a niece, Jennifer Maxey of Vicksburg; a nephew, Ruben Maxey of Vicksburg; and friends and other relatives, including the Rev. Willie James Sr., Ernest Walton, Rosie Williams and Johnnie Flaggs, all of Vicksburg.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Josephine Johnson

Services for Josephine Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Gardner officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Robbins Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 87.

A native of Yazoo County, Mrs. Johnson had lived in Vicksburg a number of years. She was a member of Evergreen Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Judge and Melissa Claiborn, and a brother.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Ernestine Luckett of Vicksburg; a stepgranddaughter, Rose Jackson of Vicksburg; two stepgrandsons, Cheyenne Mack of Vicksburg and Charles Ellis of Decatur, Ill.; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
