[9/8/04]Vicksburg’s long nightmare of a season continued on Tuesday.

The Missy Gators managed only one hit until the seventh inning, committed nine errors, and lost to Greenville-Weston 16-5 at Halls Ferry Park.

“It’s something that’s been going on all year, but we’ve been hitting better than this,” said VHS coach Kori Crutchfield, whose team had eight hits in a loss to Northwest Rankin on Thursday, but just three against Greenville. “They just didn’t adjust to the pitching very well, and to the umpire.”

Denise Cross went 3-for-3 with a home run for Greenville (8-3), and Quandolyn Freeman was 4-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Alyssa Cole also drove in three runs for the Honeybees, and Breanna Lewis had two RBIs.

Heather Shelby and JaWanda Bingham each had an RBI triple for Vicksburg, which scored four of its five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Greenville blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth. Already leading 6-0, the Honeybees started the inning with three straight singles and an RBI fielder’s choice by Cole. Two errors and an RBI triple by Lewis capped the rally and gave Greenville an 11-0 lead.

Vicksburg (2-8) had plenty of chances to at least keep the game close. Greenville pitcher Camissia Jackson walked 13 batters, but the Missy Gators were unable to take advantage of the free passes.

The Missy Gators’ only hit through the first six innings was a bloop single by Temika Davenport in the fourth. They finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth, with three walks and a sacrifice fly by Davenport, but didn’t put together a rally until the bottom of the seventh.

Three walks and the triples by Shelby and Bingham helped cut Greenville’s lead to 16-5, but it was far too late to make a comeback.
