Effie Mae Floyd

Effie Mae Floyd died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her home. She was 91.

A native of Claiborne County, Mrs. Floyd had lived in Vicksburg for 50 years. She retired as a nurse from the former ParkView Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Warrenton Church of Christ.

Mrs. Floyd was preceded in death by her parents, William M. and Maggie Mae Boyd Moore; three sisters, three brothers, nieces and nephews.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary L. Moore of Vicksburg; a niece, Bobbie Jean Bell of Utica; a nephew, Roy Moore of Clinton; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home with Brother Les Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Warrenton Church of Christ, 150 Redbone Road, Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Tommy Guthrie

Tommy Guthrie died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at his home. He was 59.

A native of Murray, Ky., Mr. Guthrie had been a Vicksburg resident for 20 years. He was a retired used car manager for Blackburn Motor Company and a member of Bovina United Methodist Church.

Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his father, T.W. Guthrie and a brother, Herman Guthrie.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Guthrie of Hazel, Ky.; his stepfather, Alton Ridings of Hazel, Ky.; his wife, Linda Hale Guthrie of Vicksburg; a daughter, Michelle Collins of Vicksburg; three sons, Phillip Peeler of Memphis, Shay Guthrie and Shane Guthrie, both of Vicksburg; two sisters, Rebecca Miller and Kathy Wrye, both of Murray, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bovina United Methodist Church with the Revs. Laneete Little and Dwight Sibley officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home and at 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Chad Weekly, Richard Kette, Chris Collins, G.T. Wilkerson, Cecil Simmons, G.T. “Red” Dowdy, Tommy Runnells and James Tart.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Liggens, J.E. “Brother” Blackburn, Jimmy Knight and the men and youth of the Bovina United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Marie Oliver Howard

Marie Oliver Howard died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Belmont Gardens. She was 91.

Born in Kilmichael to Cecil Calvert and Lucy Hovas Oliver, Mrs. Howard had been a Vicksburg resident for 70 years. She was a graduate of Montgomery County Agricultural High School and received a degree as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital and the Street Sanitarium School of Nursing. She completed postgraduate studies at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She was a nurse specialist in the areas of polio, rabies and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Mrs. Howard worked at Mercy Hospital for 26 years and spent 17 of those years as an instructor of pediatrics with the School of Nursing. She retired from the hospital in 1977.

Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband, Van Howard; two brothers, Lester Oliver and Don Oliver; and five sisters, Mozelle Denley, Leone Dunn, Selma Renfroe, Cecil Felts and Nell Price.

She is survived by two daughters, Patsy H. Hallberg of Picayune and Betsy Farrell of Vicksburg; a grandson, Jimmy Farrell of Clinton; three granddaughters, Susan Powell of Baton Rouge and Christina Sampson and Nancy Hayes, both of Picayune; two brothers, Zip Oliver of Clinton and Ralph Oliver of San Diego, Calif.; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Riles Funeral Home with Dr. John G. McCall, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. Monday until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Walter Hallberg Jr., Walter Hallberg III, Jimmy Farrell, Mike Hayes, Jim Hess and Miles McWilliams.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Mitchell, John Lanting, Charlotte Ellis and Sybil Atkinson.

Henry Lee Johnson

Henry Lee Johnson died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003 in Los Angeles, Calif. He was 24.

A native of Vicksburg, Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Henry Byrd and Will Johnson; a grandmother, Lula Mae Stevenson; his foster parents, Richard Lee Davis Jr., Lucille Byrd Davis, Ernestine Willis and Laura Turner; and a brother, Michael Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his father, Henry Lee Stevenson of Pearl; his mother, Mary Lorraine Miller of Jackson; two brothers, Barry Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jason Johnson of Vicksburg; three sisters, Lashanna Jackson, Lovenia Ramakonthan and Shanaka Johnson, all of Vicksburg; and other relatives including the Turner, Bright and Davis families of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Reginal Harris officiating under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jessie Davis, Milton Davis, Malcolm Harris, Robin Gray, Derrick Jackson and Jason Johnson.

John Arvil Marshall

John Arvil Marshall died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at his home. He was 67.

Mr. Marshall was born in Eden and had been a Vicksburg resident for most of his life. He was a retired painting contractor. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Mr. Marshall is survived by his mother, Martha E. Marshall; two brothers, Melvin Marshall and Marvin Marshall; and two sisters, Mavis Barnes and Rose Gardner, all of Vicksburg.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Talbert officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 until 5 today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Justin Boler, Michael Boler, Kevin Jones, Christopher DeRossette, Terry West and Isreal West.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jackson Fowler, Dr. Yoshinobu Namihira and the staff of the Patients’ Choice Hospice Care.

Jane Jewell Ross

Jane Jewell Ross died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home. She was 95.

The daughter of John Louis and Jane Fletcher Andress, Mrs. Ross was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy. She was a member of the Genealogical Society and the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society. She was of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Ross Jr.; a son, Billy Ross III; a daughter, Diane Ross King; and three grandsons, Billy Ross IV, Mike King and Stephen Hubbard.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Ross Warnock of Vicksburg; a son, Fred Ross of Carpenter; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. John Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Ed King, Ryan King, Levi King, Roger Powers, Mark Powers, Ernest Warnock Jr., Edward Warnock, Wayne Warnock and Chris Ross.

Honorary pallbearers will be Otto Hearn Jr., Ben Ross, Max Windham and Robert Derrick.
