[9/11/04]Porters Chapel ran its scoreless streak on defense to 14 quarters Friday night with a runaway 49-0 victory over an overmatched Union Academy (1-2).

Chris Mixon scored three touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Michael Busby threw for a career-high 181 yards and a pair of scores for the Eagles (3-1).

Porters Chapel has not given up a point since the first half of the opening game of the season. This was the team’s third straight shutout and PCA has outscored its opponents 157-0 in those three games.

“We wanted to pitch a lot of shutouts,” PCA coach Randy Wright said. “Actually, one of the goals we had was to not give up a point this season. Obviously we can’t reach that goal, but we have a good scoreless streak going right now.”

Porters Chapel held Union to three first downs and 102 yards of total offense. The clock ran for the entire second half after the Eagles took a 28-0 lead into the break.

PCA had Union held to less than 100 yards until the final play of the game a 4-yard run to put the Saints over the 100 mark.

“The defense has been playing well and as long as the offense keeps playing, we’ll be all right,” Mixon said.

Mixon hauled in a 71-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the game for the first PCA score. Kenny Simms then added a 49-yard punt return and a 27-yard run for a 21-0 Eagles’ lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mixon’s 32-yard TD run in the second quarter increased the lead to 28-0. Union turned the ball over three times in the half.

“What this amounted to was they executed on both sides of the football and we didn’t,” Union coach Carl Griffith said. “That’s where the ballgame is won and lost.”

Mixon scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Busby connected on his second touchdown pass of the night late in the third quarter for a 37-yarder to Gerald Mims.

PCA added a Spencer Pell 22-yard run with 7:18 left in the game, and kicker Evan Rogers added his seventh extra point kick of the night for the 49-0 margin.

The Eagles will get their biggest test of the season on Friday night in a non-district matchup with Tensas Academy. PCA won last year’s meeting, 40-0.
