Katie Ruth Bottin

GULFPORT Katie Ruth Bottin died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in Gulfport. She was 74.

A Gulfport native, Mrs. Bottin was the retired owner and operator of Bottin’s Beautyland. She graduated from Woolmarket High School in Biloxi and Gulf Coast Academy of Beauty in Gulfport. She graduated and received a license from Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa, Okla., and received a certificate of counseling and bachelor’s degree in theology from Liberty Bible College in Pensacola, Fla.

She was a member of Family Worship Center and, after her retirement, served as associate chaplain at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport and worship coordinator at the hospital’s Sun Coast Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Bottin was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Bottin Sr.; her parents, Samuel Dewey Walker Sr. and Lena Myers Walker; a brother, Samuel Dewey Walker Jr.; and a grandson, Eric Scott Bottin.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Ray Bottin Jr. of Vicksburg and James Albert Bottin of Cabot, Ark.; one daughter, Linda Susanne Bottin Latil of Gulfport; two brothers, James Ellis Walker of Gulfport and Robert Earl Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Ellen Smith of Gulfport, Lola May McConachie of Nashville, Tenn., and Norma Jean Pope of Fayetteville, N.C.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home in Gulfport. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Emma Bride

Emma Bride died Tuesday, June 28, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 88.

A Vicksburg resident, Mrs. Bride was a member of the choir at Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was a domestic worker and private sitter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Bride; her parents, Horace and Lela Freeland; a brother, Clarence Freeland; and a sister, Rosie Lee Harris.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Wilson and Roosevelt Wilson, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Gladys Haygood of Inglewood, Calif.; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Kallie Aidan McGuffie

KALISPELL, Mont. Kallie Aidan McGuffie, infant daughter of Scott and Kimberly Phillips McGuffie, died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, Mont.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother River McGuffie of Kalispell; a sister, Ella McGuffie of Kalispell; her paternal grandmother, Lynn McHann of Vicksburg; paternal grandfather, Bill McGuffie of Kalispell; maternal grandmother, Karen Phillips of Kalispell; and great-grandparents, Jerrie and George Boutwell of Satartia and Margie and Warren Ortman of Kalispell.

Services will be at noon Thursday at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery with Scott Walberg officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory in Kalispell.

Amelia Hill Mitchell

Services for Amelia Hill Mitchell will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Center. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Service.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mitchell died Friday, June 25, 2004, at River Region West Campus. She was 85.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Mitchell retired from the Vicksburg Police Department as a school crossing guard. She was a member of the New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Bertha Boyd; a daughter, Joyce Grissom; husbands, James Hill Sr. and William Mitchell; four brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Julius Hill of Omaha, Neb., James Hill Jr. of Vicksburg and Michael Hill of Jackson; a daughter, Lillie Hill Mixon of Vicksburg; 25 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Luther Thomas

TALLULAH Luther “Super Bubble” Thomas died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Olive Branch Nursing Home in Tallulah. He was 74.

Mr. Thomas had lived in Vicksburg before moving to Tallulah nine years ago. He was a retired mechanic for the City of Vicksburg and was a former employee of the Vicksburg Fire Department and Police Department. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Thomas; and two grandchildren, John Allen Thomas and Jonathan Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Wilson Thomas of Tallulah; a son, Hugh Thomas of Tallulah; three daughters, Faye Arnold of Tallulah, Dianne Gamel of Dallas, Ga., and Patsy Gilmore of Morton; a brother, J.C. Thomas of Vidalia, La.; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg with the Rev. Michael Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Williams, Kendle Lawrence, David Gilmore Jr., Jamie Gilmore, Dewayne Boykin and Duke Creel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Caigle and Hugh Thomas Jr.

Wallace Winston

MUSKEGON, Mich. Wallace Winston died Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon, Mich. He was 57.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Winston had lived in Muskegon for 40 years. A retired computer technologist, he was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wallace Louis Winston; his father, James Winston Sr.; and two brothers, James Winston Sr. and Leo Winston.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Winston of Muskegon; a daughter, Theresa Winston of Muskegon; his mother, Marie Winston of Vicksburg; six sisters, twin Gladys Winston, Dorothy Erves, Beatrice Perkins and Thelma Winston, all of Vicksburg, Harriet Langs of New Orleans and Sue Anderson of Muskegon; three brothers, Thomas Winston of New Orleans, McArthur Winston of Muskegon and Charles Winston Sr. of Vicksburg; one grandson; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Muskegon under the direction of Toomes Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunrise Cemetery.
