Sally Welch Atkins

PIONEER, La. Sally Welch Atkins died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at West Carroll Memorial Hospital in Oak Grove. She was 62.

Mrs. Atkins was a resident of Pioneer, La.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Lee Welch Sr. and Laura Blanche Welch; and a brother, John Lester Welch.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Atkins Sr. of Pioneer; a son, Howard “Buddy” Atkins of Darnell, La.; two daughters, Karen Atkins Neathery of Darnell and Ramona Atkins Pace of Vicksburg; three brothers, Earl L. Welch Jr. of Darnell and William Timothy Welch and Joe Welch, both of Minden, La.; two sisters, Leona Eubanks of Oak Grove and Vivian Chestnut Hattaway of Darnell; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. Paul Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday until 9 p.m. and Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Chestnut, John Earl Chestnut, John L. Welch, Tony M. Welch, John Newton Welch and David Shane Welch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Eubanks, Dr. Ollie Garrison, Dr. Joe Najjar, Leonard Black, Joe Elliott and Steve Morgan.

Lenfield Brock

Services for Lenfield Brock will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Brock died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 84.

A native of Harrisville, Miss., he had been a Vicksburg resident for 60 years. He was the son of the late Henry and Euna V. Sandifer Brock. He graduated from Harrisville High School and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Brock worked for Walker Farm for five years and was an independent distributor for Borden Dairy Products for 15 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Brock; and two brothers, Troy Brock and Roy Brock.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Barlow and Shirley B. Henry, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Robert Brock of Vicksburg; two sisters, Virgie Mae Lewis of Vicksburg and Bertie Joseph of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be David Henry, Jeff Barlow, Michael Henry, Howard Lewis, Doug Barlow and Kenneth Langford.

Louis Coleman

PORT GIBSON Louis Coleman died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 83.

Mr. Coleman was a resident of Port Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora and Lewis Coleman; a son, Henry Coleman; a brother, Walter Coleman; and three sisters, Penola McCoy, Elnora Keith and Emma J. Crowder.

Survivors include four sons, Bennie Coleman of Benson, N.C., Charles Coleman of Pekin, Ill., Albert Coleman of St. Louis, Mo., and Daniel Coleman of Chicago; three daughters, Essie R. Abbott of St. Louis, Gladys Agustus of Houston, Texas, and Dorothy Guyton of O’Fallon, Ill.; a brother, Willie Coleman of St. Louis; two sisters, Elizabeth Cunningham of Vaiden and Jessie Hunter of Port Gibson; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Mount Zion M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Isaiah Agustus of The Body of Christ M.B. Church in Houston officiating. Burial will follow at Carbondale Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home.

Velma L. Evans

Velma L. Evans died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 61.

Mrs. Evans retired from the Sydney Building after 25 years. She was a member of New Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Glenn Evans; a brother, Willie Frank Evans; two sisters, Helen Williams and Mary Cage; and her parents, Phillip Sr. and Lucille Barnes Evans.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Evans of Dallas and Tony Evans of Vicksburg; two daughters, Barbara Evans of Vicksburg and Carmen Evans-Brinkley of Dallas; one brother, Terry Evans of Inglewood, Calif.; a sister, Bobbie Gibbs of Vicksburg; her stepmother, Carolyn Sweet Evans of Vicksburg; 13 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Tom Johnson

Tom Johnson died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at his home. He was 72.

Retired from the Corps of Engineers, Mr. Johnson was a Vietnam veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah Sr. and Florida Johnson.

He is survived by a son, Anthony Nervis of South Carolina; two daughters, Tonya Gregory and Tracey Scott, both of Vicksburg; three brothers, Elijah Johnson Jr. and Amos Johnson, both of Vicksburg, and William Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Florence Harmon of Greenwood and Alberta McGuffie of Memphis; five grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
