Murals in the spotlights

Published 12:00 am Friday, September 24, 2004

Murals along the floodwall at City Front are illuminated by 14 new lights, some donated by Cooper Lighting and $11,000 worth purchased by the City of Vicksburg. The mural project, led by local volunteer Nellie Caldwell and a committee, has seen 10 murals completed by Louisiana artist Robert Dafford, and a total of 35 are planned. The murals, along Levee Street and parallel to the Yazoo River Diversion Canal, present a visual timeline of historical events important to Vicksburg, the Mississippi River and the area. Caldwell announced this week that sponsors have come forward for another mural, dedicated to the Sultana, which sank in the Mississippi River near Memphis after leaving Vicksburg during the Civil War. The sponsors are The Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen and The Descendants of the Sultana. To the right in the photo is Horizon’s riverboat casino. (Jon GiffinThe Vicksburg Post)
