[4/7/04]St. Aloysius took extended batting practice Tuesday afternoon, and it was Pelahatchie, not coaches, throwing the meatballs.

The Flashes (9-8) ripped Pelahatchie in a doubleheader, 18-1 and 22-9.

“They’re young and they don’t have a bunch of anything,” St. Al coach Joe Graves said. “They don’t have the things we have, as far as a summer program.”

St. Al is scheduled to play at Cathedral tonight. If St. Al wins by more than 12 runs, the Flashes will earn the Division 7-1A title. If not, the team will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

“If we beat them by 12 runs, we’ll need the National Guard to get us out of Natchez,” Graves said with a chuckle. “They won’t let us get back to Vicksburg.”

The Flashes registered 17 hits in the first game, led by Curtis Robertson and Joe Mocknick’s three hits each.

Rob Jones belted a two-run home run, a double and had three RBIs, while Jordan Muirhead and Matt Thornton had two hits each.

The Flashes sent nine to the plate in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. They added eight runs in the second, four in the third and capped the blowout with Jones’ blast in the fourth.

Kyle Richards, who had an RBI double, pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed one run on one hit.

Lance Thompson pitched four innings for the Chiefs and was charged with the loss.

In the second game, St. Al scored 12 runs in the second inning and had 19 hits in the second blowout.

Muirhead led the charge with four hits, while Thornton, Dustin Jones, Mocknick, Robertson, Richards and Drew Mazzanti each had two hits.

Andy Wiles improved to 6-2 on the season.

Prep softball

Bogue Chitto 5, St. Aloysius 4

Laura Beth Lyons went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and had eight strikeouts, but the Lady Flashes were eliminated from playoff contention.

Bogue Chitto had only two hits, but the Lady Flashes committed six errors, two in the eighth inning.

Candice Park went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Sarah Kerut belted a double. Taylor George and Mary Myers Franco each had an RBI single.

Bogue Chitto scored three runs in the third, after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the inning.
