Doris Christine Lewis

CRYSTAL SPRINGS Doris Christine Lewis died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. She was 75.

A native and lifelong resident of Copiah County, Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.V. Lewis Jr.

Survivors include six sons, Randy Lewis of Vicksburg, Robert Lewis, Richard Lewis and Johnny Lewis, all of Crystal Springs, Jimmy Lewis of San Antonio, Texas, and Tommy Lewis of Florence; four daughters, Brenda Woods of Vicksburg, Debbie Strong of Utica, Barbara Jones of Crystal Springs and Louise Douglas of Hazlehurst; two brothers, Carl Kelly of Natchez and Billy Kelly of Lumberton; 25 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Stringer Family Funeral Services in Hazlehurst. Burial will follow at Palestine Cemetery.

Lawrence Newman

Services for Lawrence Newman will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Robbins Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be all day Wednesday and until the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Newman died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at his home. He was 86.

He was a longtime resident of Vicksburg and an Army veteran of World War II. He retired as a baker in Chicago and was a member of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Laura Freeman Walker; and three brothers, including the Rev. Hardie Lewis of Vicksburg.

He is survived by one niece, Janice Winters of Vicksburg; one nephew, Hardie Lewis Jr. of Jackson; and other relatives, including the Cook, Rush, Reed and Walker families.

Ethel Marie Pillars

PIONEER Ethel Marie Pillars died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at her home in Pioneer. She was 82.

Mrs. Pillars was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Pillars; and her parents, Alonzo Richard and Margaret Lee Jacobs.

Survivors include two sons, Johnny Pillars and Terry Pillars, both of Pioneer; a daughter, Dorothy Goodwin of Tallulah; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi with the Rev. Annie Mae Farmer officiating. Burial will follow at Epps Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tyrel Jacobs, Kenny Rundell, Craig Freeman, Darrell Oliver, Brian Travis and Charity Pillars.

Joseph Louis Prater

PORT GIBSON Joseph Louis Prater died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at his home in Port Gibson. He was 64.

Mr. Prater is survived by his wife, Archie Jean Prater of Port Gibson; a son, Joseph Douglas Prater of Fayette; his father, Percy Prater of Port Gibson; two brothers, Henry Prater of Chicago and Nathaniel Prater of Meridian; one sister, Diane Robinson of Detroit; two granddaughters; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Greater St. Mark M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Leon Howard officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eddie Ainsworth. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery in McBride, Miss.

Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Port Gibson and from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the church.

Mavis Adams Wood

TALLULAH Mavis Adams Wood died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004. She was 85.

Born in Bogue Chitto, Mrs. Wood was a member of Life Tabernacle in Baton Rouge for 20 years. She had been a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Tallulah since 1981.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Pink Adams and Clara Leona Pickering Adams; six brothers, Lloyd Adams, Herman Adams, Troy Adams, Sherman Adams, Carl Edgar “Son” Adams and William Pink “Dub” Adams Jr.; two sisters, Cora Lee Delaughter and Mildred Lee; a grandson, Weston James LeDoux; and a great-grandson, Jason Jordon.

She is survived by two sons, Johnny Wood of Monroe and Sam Bailey of Natchez; four daughters, Erlene Brice of Delhi, Shirley Welch of Minden, La., Ruth McDonald of Baker, La., and Brenda Wildman of Zachary, La.; one brother, Floyd “Buddy” Adams of Walker, La.; two sisters, Alma Lambert of Monticello and Margie Mason of Wisner, La.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Pentecostal Church of Tallulah with the Revs. Gregory Nichols and B.A. Spell officiating. Burial will follow at Faith Memorial Park Cemetery in Delhi under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi.
