[3/17/04]When Cathedral beats archrival St. Aloysius, in any sport, it’s a memorable experience for the Green Wave.
Doing it on St. Al’s home field, while dominating and embarrassing the Flashes in the process, just makes it a little sweeter.
Te Riley allowed just two baserunners in a one-hit shutout, and Garrett Jones and Jeremy Davis each drove in three runs as Cathedral routed St. Al 11-0 Tuesday at Bazinsky Field. It was Cathedral’s first win over St. Al in Vicksburg since 1997.
“We love it,” said Riley, who also went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. “That’s the biggest rivalry we have, and it feels really good to go out there and beat them like that.”
Jones went 3-for-4 with a double for Cathedral (8-2, 2-0 Division 7-1A), while Davis homered and doubled. Charlie Lane also hit a solo homer for the Green Wave, and Michael Blain had two RBIs and scored three runs.
Kyle Richards doubled for St. Al’s only hit. The Flashes (2-4, 1-1) committed three errors and only hit three balls out of the infield.
“It’s definitely a wake-up call,” Richards said. “We’ve got to really get after it now. We can’t coast like we’ve been doing. It’s going to be tooth-and-nail the rest of the season.”
Cathedral was staked to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, then blew it open in the fourth.
St. Al starter Andy Wiles got two of the first three batters out, then allowed a single to No. 9 hitter Andrew Ellard and a two-run base hit to Blain that put Cathedral ahead 4-0. Jones followed with an RBI double, Davis was hit by a pitch, and Riley singled in another run to cap the rally.
The Green Wave batted around in the inning, then did it again in the top of the fifth.
Lane led off with a homer, Jones made it 9-0 with a two-run single, and Davis followed with a monstrous two-run homer over the center field fence for the final runs.
“Our pitcher stopped hitting his spots, started to get the ball up in the zone, and they started hitting the baseball. They’ve got a good hitting baseball club,” St. Al coach Joe Graves said. “To be honest, early in the ballgame it wasn’t the things they did, it was the things we didn’t do. Then all they did was stay relaxed, stay back and hit the baseball because we didn’t put any pressure on them. All they could do was stay back and tee off.”
While Cathedral was slamming the ball, St. Al was slamming its bats in frustration.
Riley (2-2) kept them off-balance with a good curveball that dropped off right as it reached the plate. A second-inning walk to Curtis Robertson and Richards’ bouncing double down the left field line in the fourth were the only blemishes on Riley’s scoresheet. He finished with nine strikeouts in five innings, and retired the last six batters he faced.
“That’s the best I’ve felt in a while. Everything was on,” Riley said. “I didn’t have to throw many pitches, the defense helped out a lot and the whole team played good. (The curveball) was working really good today. It seemed to be breaking more than normal today.”
