Myrna Mangum Catchings

Myrna Mangum Catchings died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 93.

A native of Smith County, Mrs. Catchings was the daughter of the late Mangum W. and Mary Davis Ewing. She had lived most of her life in Vicksburg.

Mrs. Catchings received her LPN from Kuhn Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the Vicksburg Infirmary and Vicksburg Convalescent Home before retiring in 1984. She was a member of Hawkins United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Catchings; and two sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include two sisters, Margie M. Strong of Utica and Leo Denay of Andover, Kan.; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends, including Evelyn Mangum of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Revs. Sylvia Baylot and John Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bill Mangum, Alex Mangum, John Mangum, Ronal Mangum, Bruce Phillips, Bobby Tadlock, Norris Strong, Claude Jones and Harvey McQuireter.

Honorary pallbearers will be Erwin Baylot, George Crist, Charles Stevens, A.C. Curry, Gerald McKenzie and Dr. John C. Williams.

Lillie B. Lawyer

PASS CHRISTIAN Lillie B. Lawyer died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Pass Christian. She was 93.

A former Vicksburg resident, Mrs. Lawyer had attended Magnolia High School. She was a retired nurse and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include six sons, Cornelius Lawyer, Audray Lawyer, Bobby Lawyer, Ronald Lawyer, Cyrus Lawyer and Ted Lawyer; a daughter, Juanita Forkner; a brother, James Bosley; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of J.T. Hall Funeral Home in Gulfport.

Visitation will be from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Roosevelt Schwartz

CHICAGO Roosevelt Schwartz died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at his home in Chicago. He was 63.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Schwartz was a retired cook for Town and Country Restaurant in Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Schwartz; his parents, Dan and Annie Schwartz; a sister, Bertha Lee Tolliver; and two brothers, Dan Schwartz Jr. and James Robert Schwartz.

Survivors include two daughters, Candy Louise Schwartz and Theresa Edwards, both of Chicago; and two sisters, Annie Bell Adams and Ruby Ella Mae Schwartz, both of Chicago.

Jennie S. Scurria

TALLULAH Jennie S. Scurria died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Olive Branch Senior Care Center. She was 91.

Miss Scurria was a resident of Tallulah and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Maria Ilardo Scurria; two sisters, Sarah S. Phillips and Annie S. Lombardo; and five brothers, Philip Scurria, Sam Scurria Jr., Vincent Scurria, Anthony Scurria and Lawrence Scurria.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Scurria of Tallulah; a sister; 15 nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Edward Catholic Church with the Rev. Jacob Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the church. A rosary will follow.

Pallbearers will be Larry Scurria, Mark Scurria, Ken Ball, Tim O’Dowd, Bruce Weems, Tommy Wall, Charles Finlayson and Billy Ray Hodge.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sam Scurria, Dr. Andrew Lombardo, Dr. Sandra Scurria, Dr. L.P. Neumann Jr. and Ollie Cantrell.

Memorials may be made to St. Edward Catholic Church or Silver Cross Cemetery.

William Kirk Stevens

Visitation for William Kirk Stevens will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home.

Mr. Stevens died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Vicksburg. He was 54.

A native of Denham Springs, La., Mr. Stevens was a resident of Vicksburg and was an engineer with the Corps of Engineers.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Stevens of Helena, Ark.; a daughter, Amy Lynn Stevens of Starkville; two sons, Mark Dallas Stevens of Starkville and Eric Lee Stevens of Denham Springs; his parents, E.F. “Bull” and Beverly Bond Stevens of Denham Springs; a brother, Carl Bond Stevens of Seward, Alaska; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

J.D. Vines

J.D. Vines died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 84.

Born in Georgetown, La., Mr. Vines had been a longtime resident of Vicksburg. He was a retired pipefitter for R.G. LeTourneau and was a member of First Methodist Protestant Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Bell Vines; two sisters, Cora Lee Hester and Gurthie Canardy; his father, Jeff Vines; his mother, Lydia Sorrels; two grandsons, Jonathan McKay Jr. and Albert McKay Jr.; and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include a son, Jerry L. Vines of Vicksburg; a daughter, Annie Marie Pickering of Vicksburg; a brother, Huey Vines of Vicksburg; two sisters, Joyce Bass and Lucille Spruill, both of Monroe; six grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Gerald officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tommie Antoine, Doyle Lee, J.D. Lee, Jimmy Barlow, Scottie Williams and Chris Eldridge.

Jim Ella Williams

Jim Ella “Noon” Williams died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at her home. She was 79.

Born in Warren County, Miss Williams retired as a cook from Magnolia Best Western and Westinghouse Electric cafeteria. She was a member of St. John Burial Society and Morning Star M.B. Church in the LeTourneau community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Sr. and Arailla Miller Williams; seven brothers, Wallace Williams, John L. Williams, Harrin Williams, Amos Williams, Graham Williams, Charlie Williams Jr. and George Williams; and four sisters, Rutha Mae Jefferson, Ida Bell Stewart, Lizzett Walker and Mary Williams.

Survivors include three daughters, Laura Buck, Rutha M. Eastman and Debra Hawkins, all of Vicksburg; two sisters, Clara Thomas of Denver and Hazel Hatchett of Vicksburg; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
