Edgar J. Garrett

Edgar J. Garrett died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Belmont Gardens. He was 94.

Mr. Garrett was a native of Jefferson County and had lived in Vicksburg since 1946. An Air Force veteran, he had been stationed in India during World War II. He retired as a salesman in the hardware department at Sears and Roebuck in 1975 and was a member of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent and a member of the board and men’s club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ada Mae Dawkins Garrett.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth M. Garrett of Vicksburg; a sister, Bessie Murray of Natchez; nieces and nephews; and other relatives, including Mary Lou Garrett of Pascagoula.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Revs. Horald White, Ed Hightower and Brian Ivey officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bob Gordon, Marvin Anderson, John O’Bannon, Hilary Westbrook, Carl Warnock and Lucious Dabney.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, former and current members of the Dabney Bible Class and board members at Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church and the men’s senior adult Sunday school class at Highland Baptist Church.

Melvin Haithcock

FLORENCE Melvin Haithcock died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at his home in Florence. He was 81.

A native of Little Rock, Ark., Mr. Haithcock was a former resident of Mobile, Ala., and the Gulf Coast area and had lived in Florence since 1981. He was a veteran of the Navy and Marine Corps, serving in World War II as a hospital corpsman in the battle of Iwo Jima.

He worked as a certified radiological technician for 50 years, retiring from Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Florence.

Mr. Haithcock was preceded in death by a grandson, Lewis Haithcock.

Survivors include his wife, Chris Durden Haithcock of Florence; two sons, Melvin “Bo” Haithcock of Georgia and Karl Haithcock of Baton Rouge; one daughter, Gail Cox of Tampa, Fla.; three stepchildren, Annette Rankin and Timothy Nisley, both of Vicksburg, and Alison Young of Long Beach; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. Burial will follow at Florence City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Claudine Kelly Lee

Services for Claudine Kelly Lee will be at 2 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Biedenharn officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery.

Mrs. Lee died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 81.

Mrs. Lee was born in Rolling Fork to the late Thomas Claude and Frances Elizabeth Turpin Kelly. She was a receptionist at Vicksburg Clinic for 25 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Lee Sr., and a sister, Hallie Frances Kelly.

Survivors include a son, George S. Lee Jr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Martha Lee Thorne of Vicksburg; two grandchildren, Trey Thorne and John Ryan Lee; and one great-granddaughter, Averi Thorne.

Pallbearers will be John Nelson, Bill Wright, Tommy Lee, Woody May, Randy Bell and Wayne Roberts.

Honorary pallbearers will be W.C. Shelby, Ed Bingham, Jerry Sullivan, Dr. Paul Pierce, Dr. Martin Newcomb and the staff of the Cancer Center of Vicksburg.

Edna Vernell McBroom

FOLSOM, La. Edna Vernell McBroom died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in Franklinton, La. She was 80.

Born in Rayville, La., to the late Allen Seymour Sr. and Maudie McClain, Mrs. McBroom was a resident of Folsom, La.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard McBroom, a native of Vicksburg; a brother, Allen Seymour Jr.; a sister, Rosie Lavell; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, James McBroom of Louisiana; three daughters, Shirley McBroom Arnold, Joyce McBroom Gullno and Judy McBroom Hall, all of Louisiana; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

William Kirk Stevens

William Kirk Stevens died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Vicksburg. He was 54.

A native of Denham Springs, La., Mr. Stevens was a resident of Vicksburg and was an engineer with the Corps of Engineers.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Stevens of Helena, Ark.; a daughter, Amy Lynn Stevens of Starkville; two sons, Mark Dallas Stevens of Starkville and Eric Lee Stevens of Denham Springs; his parents, E.F. “Bull” and Beverly Bond Stevens of Denham Springs; a brother, Carl Bond Stevens of Seward, Alaska; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Seale Funeral Home in Denham Springs.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 tonight and from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.

A memorial service in Vicksburg will be held at a later date.

Sam Joseph Scurria Jr.

TALLULAH Services for Sam Joseph Scurria Jr. were at 10 a.m. today at St. Edward Catholic Church in Tallulah with the Revs. Nikie Trahan and Sebastian Kallarackal officiating. Burial followed at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Mr. Scurria died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in West Monroe, La., as the result of a car accident. He was 42.

Mr. Scurria was born in Vicksburg and lived in Calhoun, La. He was a graduate of Tallulah Academy and Northeast Louisiana University. He was an inspector for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and was a hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Scurria was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Michael Scurria, and his father, Sam Joseph Scurria Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Marietta Lombardo Scurria of Tallulah; four brothers, Andrew T. Scurria of Monroe, Edward A. Scurria of Tallulah, Gerald F. Scurria of Springfield, Mo., and John T. Scurria of Prairieville, La.; two sisters, Nancy C. Scurria of Monroe and Angela Workman of Van Buren, Ark.; and his fiance, Jackie King of Calhoun.

Pallbearers were Steve Gustafson, Marlon Evans, John Eason, Carey Butler, Charlie Price and Charles M. Finalyson.

Honorary pallbearers were co-workers from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
