Charles L. Anderson

Charles L. Anderson died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 89.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the Baptist faith and had worked as an interior painter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Techerry Anderson; his mother, Freddie Gilmer Anderson; and two sisters, Cleo Anderson Fowler and LaRanda Anderson Johnson.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rosie and Farrell Washington of Vicksburg; three nephews, Robert Earl Barnes of Dallas, Texas, Milton Charles Barnes of Birmingham, Ala., and Lester Fowler of Fairfield, Calif.; a niece, Wilda Robinson Fowler of Fairfield; and a cousin, Clardon Garrett of Chicago.

Lillian Ethel Clark Cooper

NEWELLTON Lillian Ethel Clark Cooper died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at The Olive Branch Senior Care Center. She was 89.

Born in Louisville, Mrs. Cooper had lived in Tensas Parish for 65 years. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Newellton. She was a charter member of Flowers Landing Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Sanford and Margaret Ella Rhodes Clark; four sisters, Jewel Clark, Nell Landrum, Sadie Mayo and Alma Landrum; three brothers, Ruben Clark, Howard Clark and Spivey Clark; and a son, Dr. Ralph Clark Cooper.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Ralph Jackson Cooper of Newellton; three daughters, Marilyn Virginia “Snookie” Loftin of Delhi and Margaret Shirley Napoli and Mary June Turner, both of Monroe; a sister, Allie Dwight Tobia of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Newellton with the Revs. Fulton McGraw, Don Thornton and Todd Sumrall officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church.

Thomas Albert Finnegan

ROSE HILL Thomas Albert Finnegan died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Jasper County Nursing Home in Bay Springs. He was 90.

A lifelong resident of Rose Hill, Mr. Finnegan was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Paulding.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James L. and Johanna O’Flynn Finnegan; six brothers, John A. Finnegan, William J. Finnegan, Lawrence Finnegan, Roy A. Finnegan, Charlie Finnegan and Joseph Finnegan; and two sisters, Marguerite Finnegan and Sister Melanie Finnegan.

Survivors include three sisters, Velma Boswell of Rose Hill, Sister Teresa Finnegan of Vicksburg and Martha Burns of Hattiesburg; and two brothers, Herman Finnegan of Rose Hill and Pat Finnegan of Newton.

Services were at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Paulding with the Rev. Richard Smith, the Rev. Remigus Kozak and Martin Finnegan officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery under the direction of Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs.

Pallbearers were Joe Boswell, Neil Burns, Kevin Burns, Charles Finnegan, Ronnie Finnegan and Dan Gorgas.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. A.K. Lay Sr., Dr. Keith Lay and members of the nursing services and staff at Jasper County Nursing Home.

Goldburn Gittens

Goldburn Gittens died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. He was 63.

Born in the Republic of Panama to the late Goldburn and Rosaline Gittens, Mr. Gittens was reared by his grandparents, Enid Martin and the late Sidney Martin. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rio Abajo. He was a resident of Vicksburg.

Mr. Goldburn was educated in Paraiso Canal Zone and later moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. He joined the Army in 1967 and retired as a sergeant first class in 1987. He was recalled in 1991 and served for seven more months. He worked for the State Park Services in San Francisco, Calif., and the Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif. He was later employed with the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement in 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Gittens; his mother, Rosaline Anderson of Ocala, Fla.; his grandmother, Enid Martin of New York; two sisters, Alice Ford and Valencia William, both of New York; a brother, Melburn Gittens of Boston; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Geraldine Watkins Larry

Geraldine Watkins “Ditto” Larry died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 70.

Mrs. Larry was a member of the Church of Christ and Order of the Eastern Star and had worked as a cleaning lady.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Larry; and her parents, Booker T. and Jeanette Clark Watkins.

Survivors include five sons, Douglas Thomas of Aurora, Ill., William Chyran Larry of Los Angeles, Calvin “Skip” Gaskin of Merrillville, Ind., and Booker T. Larry and Jimmie Larry, both of Vicksburg; three daughters, Betty White of Logansport, Ill., and Laura Larry and Patsy Larry-Jones, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Willis Jones of Vicksburg; 16 grandchildren, including a grandson whom she reared, Kevin Larry of Phoenix, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Lee Darden.

Juanita Gaines Peters

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. Juanita Gaines Peters died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at San Leandro Hospital in San Leandro, Calif. He was 67.

Mrs. Peters was born in Lorman to the late Alfred and Lucille Fosters Gaines. She was baptized at Fellowship Baptist Church and later joined Glad Tidings Church of God and Christ in San Leandro.

She attended Gibbs School in Jefferson County and earned a license as a vocational nurse. She retired from Eden Hospital in Pastro Valley, Calif., after 33 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Peters; one sister, Johnnie L. Gaines; and three brothers, Randolph Gaines, Rudolph Gaines and Booker T. Gaines.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Peters of San Leandro; one brother, Rowan Gaines of Lima, Ohio; six sisters, Evelyn Graham and Viola Scott, both of Vicksburg, Hattie Walton of Fayette, Mae Etta Penn of Richmond, Calif., Lenora McCray of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Dorothy Anderson Spencer of Atchison, Kan.; one granddaughter; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Dudley Brown.
