Sister Mary Melanie Finnegan

Sister Mary Melanie Finnegan, R.S.M., died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans. She was 100.

Sister Melanie was born Annie May Finnegan in Rose Hill, Miss. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1924 and made her first vows Feb. 17, 1927. She received a bachelor of arts degree at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, in 1956. She taught at various schools throughout Mississippi.

Sister Melanie retired to McAuley Home in Vicksburg before moving to Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph Finnegan, Charles Finnegan, Roy Finnegan, Lawrence Finnegan, W.J. Finnegan and John Finnegan.

She is survived by three sisters, Velma Boswell of Rose Hill, Martha Burns of Hattiesburg and Sister Mary Teresa Finnegan of Vicksburg; three brothers, Thomas Albert Finnegan and Herman Finnegan, both of Rose Hill, and Patrick Finnegan of Newton; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Vicksburg with the Rev. Patrick Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Joe Boswell, Kevin Burns, Neil Burns, Charles Finnegan, Ronnie Finnegan, Dan Gorgas and Bernard Theobald.

Ruth Pounds Gore

GREENWOOD Ruth Pounds Gore died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood. She was 97.

A native of Hamlin, Texas, Mrs. Gore had been a resident of Greenwood since 1942. She was a charter member of Phillipston Baptist Church, where she served as the first treasurer and church clerk. She was a Sunday school and Baptist training union director and teacher, woman’s mission union director, and she established the girls’ auxiliary program. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Gore; a daughter, Kathryn Gore Narmour; and a son, Robert Albert Gore.

Survivors include two daughters, Alene Gore Thornton of Vicksburg and June Gore Weir of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Lois Kegan of Warner Robins, Ga.; a brother, Howard Pounds of Indianola; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood with her grandsons, the Revs. Huey Dedmon, Stephen White and Robbie Weir, officiating.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Ronny Taylor, Skip Taylor, Bob Gore, David Weir, Ricky Weir and Chip Narmour.

Vanessa Kate Sanders Moore

FORESTVILLE, Md. Services for Vanessa Kate Sanders Moore will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Vicksburg. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Mrs. Moore died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at University of Maryland Medical Center. She was 43.

A native of Vicksburg, Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Warren Central High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Jackson State University.

Mrs. Moore had lived in Forestville, Md., for the past 16 years. She was a computer specialist for the United States Agricultural Department in Washington, D.C., and IBM in Bethesda, Md. She was a member of Arbutus Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James Scott Sr. and Ruth D. Scott.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony J. Moore Sr. of Forestville; a daughter, Katina N. Moore of Forestville; a son, Anthony J. Moore Jr. of Forestville; a stepson, Jobry A. Newson of Byhalia; her parents, Willie Sr. and Rosa L. Sanders of Vicksburg; a sister, Helen G. Sanders Heard of Vicksburg; a brother, Willie Sanders Jr. of Vicksburg; nieces and nephews; and other relatives, including James Scott Jr., Clarence D. Scott, Edna D. Williams, Elliot Scott and the Neal, Demby and J. Williams families, all of Vicksburg.

Josephine T. Rolland

TALLULAH Josephine T. Rolland died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Madison Parish Hospital. She was 51.

Born in Marksville, La., Mrs. Rolland had lived in Tallulah for the past 19 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Roman Catholic faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Elvina Bordelon; and a brother, Daniel Bordelon.

Survivors include two sons, Shane Hukins and Kelly Hukins, both of Cottonport, La.; a brother, Weaver J. Bordelon of Marthaville, La.; two sisters, Cynthia Kimble of Simesport, La., and Mary Richmond of Tallulah; six grandchildren; and others, including Grandy Cartwright of Tallulah.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Tallulah with the Rev. Ferre D’Cruz officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 tonight at the funeral home. A rosary service will be at 7.

Pallbearers will be Scott Moreau, Darrell Paul Dauzart, John Harris, Thomas Russell, Jason Whitaker and Mark Jobe.

Honorary pallbearer will be Jerry Loden.

Memorials may be made to the M.S. Society.

Wilbert Smith Sr.

Wilbert Smith Sr. died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 74.

Mr. Smith was a member of Cedar Grove M.B. Church and was a retired plumber.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent Smith and Elizabeth Franklin Smith; a son, Vincent Smith; a daughter, Doris Jean Caldwell; and a sister, Annie E. Hudson.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Smith of Vicksburg; three sons, Donald Wilbert Smith of Washington, D.C., and Wilbert Smith Jr. and Robert Smith, both of Vicksburg; two daughters, Sherry N. Smith of Vicksburg and Rosemary Washington of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Jasper Smith of San Bernadine, Calif., and Dennis Hudson of Vicksburg; a sister, Estella Brown of Vicksburg; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
