Bessie Amos

Bessie Amos died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 61.

A native of Vicksburg, Mrs. Amos was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church in Freetown.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Matilda Sims; her father, Sam Spicer Jr.; her stepfather, Tommie Lee Sims; a brother, Larry Sims; and a grandson, Chancellor Hudson.

Survivors include her husband, James Amos Jr.; two sons, Jeffery Morrison and John Amos, both of Vicksburg; four daughters, Kathlon Grissom and Janie Horton, both of Jackson, and Sammie Perkins and Tammy Hudson, both of Vicksburg; six sisters, Deborah Sutton of Rochester, N.Y., Tomizena Glover of Tacoma, Wash., Judy Taylor and Barbara Wright, both of Chicago, and Susie Jones and Athena Reece, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four brothers, Lamar Sims of Chicago, Anthony Sims of Tacoma, Stanley Spicer of Richmond, Calif., and Michael Spicer of Grand Rapids; her stepmother, Jessie Spicer of Grand Rapids; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

Col. Samuel T. Battalio

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Col. Samuel T. Battalio died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in Virginia Beach, Va. He was 87.

A Vicksburg native, Col. Battalio was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He enlisted in the Army in 1939, transferring later to the Army Air Corps. He served as squadron, group and 8th Air Force lead bombardier with the 379th Bomb Group. His decorations include six battle stars, the Distinguished Service Cross, two Legions of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, five Air Medals, Purple Heart and a Presidential Citation.

He served at the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Neb., and as a 7th Air Division intelligence officer with a tour in England.

Col. Battalio retired from the Air Force in 1969. He worked for 13 years as a senior systems engineer with Comptek Research Inc. and Unisys Corp. in Virginia Beach. He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Mazie Long Battalio; two sisters, Angelina Veronica Battalio and Mazie Battalio Garner; and a brother, Vincent J. Battalio.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Bodron Battalio; two sons, Michael S. Battalio of Virginia Beach and Robert T. Battalio of Pacifica, Calif.; two grandchildren; and other relatives, including Jack Garner of Edwards and Joe Battalio of Vicksburg.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach. Visitation will follow in The Commons.

Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery under the direction of Hollomon-Brown Bayside Chapel in Virginia Beach.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Earl Harvey Brasfield Sr.

Earl Harvey Brasfield Sr. died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 82.

A native of Okolona, Miss., Mr. Brasfield had lived in Vicksburg most of his life. He was a veteran of the Navy, Army and Mississippi National Guard, having served in World War II and Korea. He retired as a command sergeant major after 35 years of service.

Mr. Brasfield was a civil engineer for the Mississippi River Commission with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and Hawkins United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Leroy and Edna Estelle Carson Brasfield; a daughter, Marian Gail Brasfield; three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Findley Brasfield of Vicksburg; two sons, Buster Brasfield of Newport Richey, Fla., and Randy Brasfield of Vicksburg; three daughters, Beverly Roggencamp of Kansas City, Mo., Sharon Francingues of Vicksburg and Linda Randall of Slidell, La.; two brothers, Charles Brasfield of Vicksburg and Edgar Brasfield of Brandon; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawkins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Hedgepeth officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Plett, Newell Murphy Jr., Paul Miller, Clyde Scott, Bob Walters and Bob Townley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Holman, Oren Bailess, Bob Athow, George Nasif Jr., the Becomers Sunday School Class and 31st Dixie Division.

Rosie Lee Brooks

ROLLING FORK Rosie Lee Brooks died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. She was 84.

Miss Brooks was a resident of Rolling Fork.

Survivors include a daughter, Earnestine Brooks Thomas of Rolling Fork; a sister, Gloria Murphy of Woodville, Miss.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Baptist Church in Fitler, Miss., with W.C. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Old St. Matthews Cemetery in Fitler under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.

Kelvy Clayton Buck

PORT GIBSON Kelvy Clayton Buck died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 49.

A Port Gibson resident, Mr. Buck was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a veteran of the Navy.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sandra Jean Buck and Iris Elaine Buck, and a son.

He is survived by his mother, Lorraine Buck of Port Gibson; his father, Willie Buck of Port Gibson; eight brothers, Edward L. Buck and Elvis Buck, both of Jackson, Jackie Ray Buck of Port Gibson, Clayton Terrell of Hermanville, Malchie Buck of Dallas, Willie Buck Jr. of Rochester, N.Y., Dannie E. Buck of Port Orange, Fla., and Joanus Patterson of St. Paul, Minn.; four sisters, Bonnie Patterson and Lillie Patterson-Edwards, both of St. Paul, LaToya T. Buck of Hermanville and Paula L. Buck of Mobile, Ala.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends, including Charlie Coffee of Port Gibson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Port Gibson with Pastor James C. Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Buck Family Cemetery in Hermanville.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. in Port Gibson and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the service at the church.
