Charles Lester Alexander

BENTONIA Charles Lester Alexander died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 50.

Born in Yazoo County, Mr. Alexander was a resident of Bentonia and a member of Ogden Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Nicole Alexander of Vicksburg; a stepson, Shane Green of Brandon; his parents, Lester “Hot” and Helen Alexander of Bentonia; two sisters, Patricia DeLong of Flower Mound, Texas, and Betty Busby of Bentonia; and five grandchildren.

Services were at 11 a.m. today at Ogden Baptist Cemetery in Yazoo County with the Rev. Judd Allen officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Stricklin King Funeral Home.

James Elwood Hancock Sr.

Services for James Elwood “Ramrod” Hancock Sr. were at 10 a.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home with Dr. W. Frank Lescallette, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Mr. Hancock died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 77.

A native of Yazoo County, Mr. Hancock was the son of the late Samuel B. and Nettie Warnock Hancock. He had lived in Vicksburg since 1945. He was a retired logger and owned and operated All-American Carpet Cleaning Co. for 15 years. He was an Army veteran, having served in World War II and Korea. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jewel Sewell; and a brother, Wayne Hancock.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Pettway Hancock of Vicksburg; two daughters, Jean Alice Whatley and Janice Mae Wipperling, both of Vicksburg; one son, James Elwood Hancock Jr. of Vicksburg; six brothers, Roy Hancock and Lamar “Bubba” Hancock, both of Bentonia, Sammy Hancock and Jimmy Hancock, both of Gulfport, Lonnie Hancock of Phoenix and Pete Hancock of Memphis; five sisters, Margie Herrod of Bentonia, Shirley Warrington of Phoenix, Ruby Necise of Gulfport, Hattie Mae Foster of Oil City and Christine Hancock of Houma, La.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Glen Kittrell, Joey Cooper, Johnny Raney, Rodney Porter, Jack Pace and Steven Ford.

Honorary pallbearers were Mike Hancock, Joey Hancock, Tommy Hancock, David Hancock, Dr. S. Randell Easterling, Dr. Lee Voulters, Rory Pettway and hospice employees.
