Warren County supervisors Tuesday elected a new board vice president and officially began the process of filling the vacancy created by the departure of former District 2 Supervisor Michael Mayfield to become Vicksburg’s North Ward alderman.

Mayfield had been board vice president and District 3 Supervisor Charles Selmon was chosen to serve in that capacity.

Filling Mayfield’s board post will be a two-part process.

The first part will be to select someone to serve until a special election can be held and a winner certified. The board began that process by announcing it will accept resumes from registered voters in District 2 who are interested in being considered for the appointment. The resumes must be turned into the Warren County Chancery Clerk’s Office no later that 5 p.m. July 12.

A short discussion Tuesday centered on how many applicants to interview.

“I disagree with interviewing only top candidates,” said District 3 Supervisor Charles Selmon, adding he felt with an office as important as supervisor, all applicants should be interviewed.

District 4 Supervisor Carl Flanders said he would go along with whatever the board decides, but did not want to get locked into interviewing all of them.

District 5 Supervisor Richard George said he had heard there may be 15 to 18 people interested in the appointment.

The second part of the process was a resolution directing the Warren County Election Commission to hold the special election on Nov. 8. Candidates interested in running in the election must qualify no later than 60 days before the election.

The winner of the election will take office as soon as the election is certified and serve out the remainder of Mayfield’s term, a little more than two years.

Selmon’s nomination to serve as vice president came from David McDonald, District 1 supervisor and board president. The vote was unanimous.
