Police have identified a suspect in a weekend homicide and were asking today for help finding him.
Authorities have also identified the victim as 43-year-old Chenara Young. They believe she was beaten to death inside the suspect’s residence in The Vicksburg Apartments, 801 Clay St.
Being sought is William P. Brown, 32, whose state-issued ID lists a Port Gibson address. The owner of The Vicksburg said Brown had been residing there, in apartment 5F, for two months.
Police said Brown will be charged with capital murder. Anyone who knows where he might be found may call 911 or The Vicksburg Police Department at 601-636-2511.
The body of Young, who resided at 1303 Wood St., was found by a resident of The Vicksburg as she took her trash to the building Dumpster about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
She was nude, the witness and authorities said, and her body had been placed adjacent to the waste container.
An autopsy, performed Sunday afternoon at Mississippi Mortuary in Pearl, determined that the woman was killed by blunt force trauma to the head, said Capt. Mark Culbertson of the Vicksburg Police Department.
Warren County Coroner John Thomason said Young was last seen by witnesses Thursday evening, which puts the time of death between then and early Friday morning, he added.
”We’re looking at that window of time,“ he said.
By Sunday morning, police had been led to a vehicle registered to Brown, who was employed by County Market, 2101 Clay St., in the meat department. The truck has been impounded.
”During our investigation, we were led to a vehicle that we traced to Mr. Brown, and we traced Mr. Brown to the apartment, which is what we believe is the scene of the crime,“ Vicksburg Police Chief Tommy Moffett said Sunday.
Culbertson said he did not know if Brown and Young knew each other.
While officers were working at the crime scene Sunday, a man fitting Brown’s description was spotted on Grove Street looking toward the downtown area. ”As soon as we got in the area, the subject fled on foot,“ Culbertson said.
Officers flooded the area throughout the day looking for Brown. A K-9 unit was also used. Culbertson also said Brown may have been seen in Port Gibson Sunday evening.
Mike Davis, owner of the 11-story downtown apartment complex, formerly The Vicksburg Hotel, said nothing about Brown made him suspicious.
”He hadn’t been there too long and he seemed like a nice guy,“ he said. ”He always seemed like a normal, nice guy.“
Security cameras surround the building, Davis said. Police viewed the tapes, but found no information related to the crime, he added.
The capital murder charge is likely, Moffett said, on suspicion that Young was sexually assaulted. Test results were pending, Thomason said.
In Mississippi, a capital murder charge with the possibility of a death sentence can be filed if there’s evidence of a separate felony crime, such as rape, arson or robbery.
Young’s death was the fourth homicide in Warren County this year.
Charges are pending against suspects in three. No arrests have been made in the shooting death of David W. ”Jones“ Anderson, who was killed while leaving the Elks Lodge, 2916 Walnut St., on July 28.
