Carol J. Chady

Carol J. Chady died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 51.

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, Mrs. Chady had been a Vicksburg resident since 1987. She was the state secretary of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher. She was a member of a number of community organizations, including Ladies of the Moose.

Mrs. Chady was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, where she served as parish secretary and as a Eucharistic minister.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Russell Andes.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Chady of Vicksburg; a daughter, Carolyn Elizabeth &#8220Carrie” Chady of Murray, Ky.; her mother, Frances S. Andes of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, David Russell &#8220Rusty” Andes of Georgetown, Ky.; and other relatives.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. P.J. Curley officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Riles Funeral Home with Knights of Columbus prayers at 6:30 and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be David &#8220Rusty” Andes, Robin Rundhaug, Mike Cappaert, Billy Johnston, Thomas Thornton, Greg Rottman, Nolan Salassi and Jerry Boland.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Sonnek, Lamar Roberts and the Knights of Columbus.

Elsie Price Gregory

ST. JOSEPH – Elsie Price Gregory died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, in Winnsboro, La. She was 85.

Mrs. Gregory, a homemaker, was born in Newton County and had been a resident of St. Joseph for 58 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Gregory; her parents, Oscar and Estell Price; and three sisters, Eugie Kelly, Odee Parker and Gertrude Colquette.

She is survived by three sons, Donald Gregory of St. Joseph, Tommy Gregory of Jones, La., and Roger Gregory of Pine Bluff, Ark.; a brother, Marvis Price of Shreveport, La.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelly Barnett, Sidney McLemore and Joyce Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Cemetery in Newellton.

Visitation will be at the church from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, great-grandsons, and Chad Gregory and Colby Gregory.

Mary Frances Harper

Mary Frances Harper, a native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, four months shy of her 90th birthday.

Miss Harper was born on April 6, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Milton Jackson Sr. and Frances Godbold Smith Harper. She graduated with honors from Carr Central High School in 1934 and earned Music Education and Elementary Education degrees from Mississippi State College for Women in 1938. Miss Harper received a bachelor of science degree from Delta State Teachers College in 1944 and a master of arts degree in administration from Peabody College in 1951.

Miss Harper began her career in education as a teacher. Between 1938 and 1953, she taught music and numerous other subjects at elementary, junior high and high schools in Carmichael, Enterprise, Pachuta, Anguilla, Vicksburg and Clarksdale. She returned to Vicksburg in 1953 and became the first principal at Halls Ferry Road Elementary School.

She left the Vicksburg Municipal Separate School District in 1961 and began a second career as a consultant for Ginn Publishing Company, publisher of textbooks and educational materials. She retired in 1981 and continued to make her home in Vicksburg. In 2000, she moved to Evanston, Ill., to be near her brother John, and was a resident of Presbyterian Homes when she died.

Miss Harper was a strongly independent woman who was a fine musician and pianist, loved classical music and cats, and traveled the world. She was dedicated to her family, devoted to caring for her elders and spending time with her nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in the Friendship Sunday School Class and assisted in the church’s musical programs. Following retirement, she continued her work with young people by volunteering time as a tutor.

Miss Harper was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Milton Jackson (Ethel) Jr. and John Smith (Sue) Harper.

She is survived by nieces, Treeby Ann (Jerry) Flammger of Destin, Fla., and Elizabeth Ann Harper of Sonoma, Calif; nephews, John Jackson (Maryanne) Harper of Austin, Texas, and William Milton (Connie) Harper of Olympia, Wash; and one grand niece, four grand nephews, three great grand nephews; and first cousins, Tom Herron (Agnes) Mitchell of Vicksburg, Milton Harper (June) Mitchell of Brandon, and George Dennis (Trudee) Mitchell of Maitland, Fla.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the hour of the service Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home.

Elizabeth White Johnson

OAK LAWN, Ill. – Elizabeth White Johnson died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill. She was 75.

A Vicksburg native, Mrs. Johnson was a child-care provider.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Johnson; her parents, Richard White Sr. and Katie Caldwell White; four brothers, Robert White, Alphonse White, Richard White Jr. and Simon White; one sister, Isslee White Ferguson; and one son, the Rev. Richard Johnson.

She is survived by six daughters, Janie Edwards of Richton Park, Ill., Rebecca Kennedy of Anchorage, Alaska, and Doris Barnes, Gussie Harris, Ira Foster and Isslee Lee, all of Chicago; three sons, Walker Smith Jr. and Victor Johnson, both of Chicago, and Charles Woodard of California; one sister, Rebecca Thomas of Chicago; and one brother, Anderson White Sr. of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Abundant Life M.B. Church, 2306 W. 69th St., in Chicago.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at W.W. Jackson Funeral Home, 2701 W. 63rd St., in Chicago.

Samuel Walter King Jr.

Samuel Walter King Jr. died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Hospice Ministries. He was 62.

Mr. King was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. He was the son of the late Samuel W. and George Ana Kelley King.

He retired from International Paper Company after 30 years of service. He was a member of Welders and Pipefitters Union Local 619, Rocky Bayou Hunting Club and Bovina Baptist Church.

Mr. King was a Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Julia King of Vicksburg; two daughters, Janice Harrison of Nederland, Texas, and Angela Fletcher of Vicksburg; a son, Dean Sharpe of Vicksburg; five grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Alvin and Omega Barrett.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bovina Baptist Church with the Rev. Chip Starnes, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home and Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. until the service.

Pallbearers will be Parker Stevens, David McClurg, Gary Williams, Paul Carrico, K.B. Brown and Gene Jowers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Rocky Bayou Hunting Club and members of Welders and Pipefitters Local 619.

Mark C. McCormack

Mark C. McCormack died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at his home in El Paso, Texas. He was 46.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. McCormack was the son of the late Henry Floyd Jr. and Elvian Schaff McCormack . He had been a resident of El Paso for the past 15 years.

He was a graduate of United High School in Laredo, Texas, and received a degree in civil engineering from Texas State Technical Institute. He was an accounting student at Texas Tech.

Mr. McCormack was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two sisters, Mary Bridget Beard of College Station, Texas, and Tammy Steed of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Henry F. McCormack of Orlando, Fla.; and other relatives, including the Mary McCormack Brown family.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner, pastor of Crawford Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Tuesday at the funeral home from 2:30 until the service.

Pallbearers will be Gary Brown, Glynn Brown, Greg Brown, Todd Brown, Craig Brown and Dustin Beard.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Juliette Elizabeth Rowland

Juliette Elizabeth Rowland died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Heritage House Nursing Home. She was 101.

Miss Rowland was born in New Orleans to the late William Joseph and Bobbie Roberts Rowland. She moved with her family to Vicksburg around 1920.

She was a bookkeeper for the Vicksburg Evening Post for 50 years and was a member of Crawford Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Idelle Rowland Hutchison and Gladys Rowland Melsheimer; and a brother, William J. Rowland Jr.

Survivors include three nieces, Bobbie H. Horn of Clinton, Marion Seeber of New Orleans and Joyce Davis of Jacksonville, Fla.; a nephew, Redmond B. Hutchison Jr. of Hattiesburg; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner, pastor of Crawford Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the service at the funeral home.
